living in an experiment gone awry

Ok, the story of my morning: alarm goes off at 8:30. I hit snooze. (I’m working from home for the next few weeks, so I don’t really have to keep set hours.) Teenie jumps down and promptly hurls up a big hairball right next to the bed. She has been barfing constantly for the past few days. I’ve upped how frequently I give her her hairball medicine, but it doesn’t seem to be helping. Ten minutes later (around the time the snooze went off), she barfed again. On the other side of the room. Spacing it out so I have to clean 2 little spots instead of a single big one, how considerate. Regardless, this isn’t enough to make me get out of bed, I just figure I’ll clean it later. The part that makes me feel bad is that she always acts ashamed of the barf and runs away when I’m cleaning it, like she thinks she’s done something wrong. So then I feel like a bad pet-owner, as though I’ve done something to make her feel shame for a function she has no control over.

Meanwhile, back in bed, I hit snooze a couple more times. Then my cell phone rings. It’s my mom, calling me from her cell phone, not home. That’s unusual because my mom almost never uses her cell, and she would never call me at 9 a.m. unless it was an emergency. My parents are moving this week, so I thought maybe the phone line in the house got disconnected early or something. I answer the phone, and I can hear both of my parents talking, but it’s in the background, they obviously aren’t on the phone. I yell “hello” a couple of times and get no response. I hang up & call the house. Mom answers on the first ring.

Me: “Why did you just call me from your cell?”
Mom: “What?”
Me: “You just called me from your cell phone, did you bump it or something? Maybe it dialed me by accident.”
Mom: (yells, even though my dad is probably standing 5 feet away) “Sam, bring me the damn cell phone!” (to me) “Sorry, I’ll try to remember to turn the key lock on.”

Ok fine, now I’m awake. I get up, grab My Morning Giant Glass O’ Water (part of my effort to drink 64 ounces a day) and sit down at my laptop. Teenie promptly settles herself in on my lap. A few minutes later, there is an eardrum-piercing screech that is so loud I jumped out of my chair. I’m not sure how fast Teenie’s reaction time is, if I knocked her off my lap or if she jumped when she heard the noise too, but either way, she beat a hasty retreat under the bed. About 5 seconds later, the screech stopped. I checked both of my smoke alarms, they were fine. Thirty seconds later, the screech happened again. And again. I put on my shoes, hiked downstairs to the office and asked the child-abusing apartment manager what was going on. She said that the fire department was here and that they’re testing the fire alarm system in the building, it’s just a routine maintenance thing they have to do every now & then. Ok, how long is this going to go on? (Keep in mind, it was 9:30 a.m. at the time.) She says until 1:00 p.m. Great.

I go back to my apartment, find the fire alarm speakers in my apartment (not difficult, there’s one in the living room & one in the bedroom) and cover them with duct tape so the sound is somewhat muffled. It’s still loud & annoying as hell, but it keeps me from having to stop what I’m doing to plug my ears every few seconds. Teenie, however, is still spooked and staying under the bed. I know cats have more sensitive hearing than humans, so even with the duct tape, it’s probably still painfully loud for her. I should get her some kitty ear plugs, poor thing.

So now it’s 3 hours later, and the screeching still hasn’t stopped. It’ll stop for a while, then it starts again. I am slowly going insane. Forget work, there’s no way I can concentrate on anything in these conditions. Maybe I’ll go clean cat barf to take my mind off of it. Yeesh.

mixed weekend

I’ve put off writing about my weekend because I don’t really know where to begin. First of all, my cousin Teresa died on Sunday morning. What can I possibly say about that? There are no words. Catherine wrote a really beautiful post about it on her web site, so I think I’ll let that sum it up for me. I couldn’t possibly state it any more eloquently than she did.

Second, having Kris here was great. The family situation definitely took some wind out of our typical “party it up” sails, but I’m glad that she was here to let me cry on her shoulder. Dave has been great too (as always). It was nice to have my support system around me when I needed it. And it was cool that Dave & Kris got to meet for the first time, they really seemed to hit it off. I was a little worried about that, but it seems that there was no need to be concerned.

Other weekend highlights:
* Whale-watching didn’t happen, due to the fact that we would’ve had to get up at 6 a.m. on Saturday to drive to the ferry and wait in line for 3 hours. Hmmm… Ok, maybe next time.
* I discovered a new bar in my neighborhood that I really like.
* We sat on the beach and watched children playing.
* I love the SuperMall. Even though I can spend 2 hours there and not spend a single penny.
* My neighbors on either side of me now hate me, because I don’t let people smoke in my apartment. And since Kris is a smoker, she had to go out on my balcony every time she wanted a cigarette. Apparently every time she lit up, the neighbors would slam their windows shut. The thing is, I’m totally sympathetic because I hate the smell of cigarettes, and I would be pissy too if the situation were reversed. But what can you do?
* I broke a pool table. Or maybe it was already broken, who knows. But I grabbed one corner of it when I bent down to pick up a quarter that I had dropped, and it snapped off. And since that corner was what I was using to hold my balance, I fell flat on my butt (and took the corner piece of the pool table with me). How lovely. And typical.

Side note: Today officially marks 3 months since Dave and I had our first date. Awww….

I wonder if his name is Homer

I want to hang out with this fella. I’d be willing to go down for some beer and doughnuts, too.

On another subject, one of the things on the agenda when Kris arrives is to go on a road trip. Originally we were going to go to Mount Rainier – however, it looks like it’s going to be cloudy with scattered showers in Seattle this weekend, which means that the mountain will be completely rainy and too cloudy to see anything. And the whole point of going is for the amazing views. So I was trying to figure out an alternative road trip, and I came up with the San Juan Islands, which is a small cluster of islands between Washington and Canada that’s just a short drive plus a ferry ride away. I found this website, which has this interesting little factoid about one of the islands:

“The Orcas make their home in the San Juans typically from late April through the end of September – sometimes longer. They can be seen from land, most likely from the west side of the island at Lime Kiln Point State Park, also known as ‘Whale Watch Park’ – the only such park in the nation, or from a commercial whale/wildlife boat.”

Are you kidding me? We can go whale-watching!! How cool is that?? I’ve never seen an orca in real life! That is too cool!! I freaked out when I read that yesterday, and I have been super-excited ever since. I cannot wait until Saturday, that’s going to be so awesome.

Side note: Today is the one year anniversary of my blog. Happy 1st birthday, PooBou.com!

slacker

So, tomorrow night, Kris gets to town. Kris, as in my best friend in the whole wide world, former college roommate, the person who can read what I’m thinking better than anyone on the planet, the woman who would be my soul mate if only we were both gay, Kris. She’s flying in from Memphis, and I have been excited about it ever since we booked the ticket back in April. Now that the time is actually here, I almost can’t believe it. There’s so much that I want to do while she’s here, and I don’t know how I’m going to fit it all in to 4 days. (She gets here late Thursday night & leaves early Tuesday morning.)

Now, the only problem is that my apartment is a disaster with a capital D, and I can’t seem to motivate myself to clean it up. Kris hasn’t seen this place yet (obviously, I’ve only lived here 4 months & I haven’t seen her since Christmas), so I want it to look nice when she gets here, but for some reason I can’t seem to get off my ass and tidy up. I know that if I just spent 2 hours on it, it would be done and I could stop worrying. But I’ll probably put it off until the last minute, as is my usual tendency.

In other news:
* The foghorns on the boats in the Sound have been crazy loud today. And constant. They keep making me jump every time they “huwhaaaanh!!!” out there.
* Teenie has apparently fallen in love with my dirty clothes basket, she seems to be sleeping in it all the time. Perhaps this is because the basket is in my closet, and it’s dark and shady (and cooler) in there. Or maybe it’s because it smells like me (or at least my b.o.). Who knows.
* Speaking of Teenie, I left her hairball medicine at Dave’s, and as a consequence, she left a nice little present for me on my comforter. And the floor. Ick.
* I found out that one of my cousins and his wife are pregnant. He’s 3 years younger than me. Sigh. No comment.
* I downloaded customized ring tones for my phone. Among the most notable: Kris is “Toxic” by Britney Spears (hee!), Dave is “Take On Me” by A-Ha (80’s new wave seemed appropriate for him, for some reason), my mom is “Superfreak” by Rick James (don’t ask), my brother is “Bohemian Rhapsody” (the classic rock guy), and my sister is “Electric Avenue” by Eddy Grant (because that song makes me think of Times Square, which makes me think of NYC, which makes me think of Tracy – plus it’s a cheesy 80’s tune, which fits her). Aww yeah, I’m cool.

rough weekend

I got back from Atlanta yesterday afternoon. The trip was hard, and I don’t think I can do it justice by trying to write about it, so I’ll just hit the highlights:

* After I got in on Friday night, my brother, sister & I stayed at Tracy’s friend Renee’s apartment. My sister’s birthday is on Sunday, so Renee got a little cake & we sang happy birthday to her. It didn’t seem appropriate to do that with the other family members around, given the circumstances of our visit, but it was cool to have a little mini-party with just us.

* I have concluded that even though all of my family is loud, and people who I’m not related to tell me that I’m loud on a pretty regular basis, my sister is, hands down, the loudest. And she really does laugh like Cruella DeVille. (Think head thrown back, loud “muwahahaha!” cackle.)

* On the way to lunch on Saturday, I tripped & fell on a curb. Before you ask, no, I was not drinking in the morning. I inherited this klutz gene from my mom, I come by it honestly and this type of thing is not at all uncommon. But I was wearing capri pants, so it was bare skin on sidewalk. It was one of those falls that feels like it’s happening in slow motion in your head – like “gee, this is really going to hurt when I land…” and then BAM! Ouch. I fell in such a way that my left leg was out to the side and my right leg folded up under me, so I ended up with a skinned right knee & shin, plus the inside of my left ankle and foot are skinned too. It still hurts. I grabbed my jeans out of my suitcase in the car and changed in the ladies’ room of the restaurant because I didn’t want people looking at my wounded legs for the rest of the day. Ugh.

* My aunt, the lesbian new age psychologist (p.s., she used to be a nun), had a couple of oversharing/too much information moments with me. One of them actually came from her new partner, who told us when giving us the grand tour of their house, gestured toward all the woods behind their backyard and said “See, there’s 27 acres of trees out there. It’s so secluded, one of our favorite things to do is run out the back door naked to get in the hot tub. No one can see us, it’s great!” Before any of you guys start thinking about how hot lesbians are or whatever, let me add that my aunt and her partner are both 60 years old. Re-write that mental image accordingly. Eww. Not so cool & sexy now, is it?

* On the flight home, I got upgraded to first class, and I swear I have no idea how that happened. They had assigned me to seat 15-G, and I had gotten all settled in, then the flight attendant comes down the aisle and says “Are you Cynthia?” to me. I confirmed, and she said, “Here’s your new seat assignment,” and handed me a boarding pass that says I’m supposed to be in seat 6-A. Right on. That was so cool. I had my own little private TV, I watched different, unedited movies (no “Garfield” for me, suckas! I’m watching Johnny Depp say the F-word in “Secret Window”!), and I played video games. Oh, and the seats turn into recliners so you can actually sleep comfortably. Sweet! That was the nicest flight I’ve ever been on.

As for seeing my cousin, it was good. She was really excited to see all of us, she was sitting up & acting like her normal self for at least 30 minutes, maybe closer to an hour. It felt like any normal family get-together where we just sit around and talk about whatever everyone is up to – except for the IV’s and the oxygen mask and all of that stuff, but that was all pretty easy to ignore. Saying good-bye to her was difficult, although by that point, she wasn’t feeling well anymore and wanted us all to leave. I didn’t do so well at holding myself together after we left the hospital. I can’t remember the last time I’ve cried that much. But I suppose it was good to get it out of my system, in spite of how puffy my eyes were the next day. Damn. Like I said earlier, it was rough.

However, one bright note is that I think that this experience has brought my cousins and I closer together. This was the first time we’ve all said “I love you” when we were saying good-bye to each other. Even my brother, sister & I don’t usually say that, but we did this weekend. I guess it’s usually just understood without being said, but this time seemed especially important to say it out loud. So I suppose that’s a positive outcome, even though it sucks that it took something this drastic for it to happen.

birthday shout-out

Happy birthday to my sister, who:

* Laughs like Cruella DeVille. (It’s true!)
* Taught me how to apply eye make-up, style my hair, shave my legs, etc.
* Lets me call her crying at 2 a.m., and cries with me on the phone.
* Buys me cute girly I.N.C. brand shirts and badass biker chick studded belts.
* Calls me 30 minutes into a second date to ask how it’s going. (Incidentally, that was my 2nd date with Dave, so it was going quite well, thank you very much.)
* Is one of the funniest people I know (and gets even funnier after her 2nd glass of wine).
* Addresses animals in an even higher-pitched baby voice than I am capable of (and I’m pretty squeaky).
* Has bailed me out of more than one financial crisis.
* Broke in my parents first, so I got away with more stuff (getting my ears pierced at 9, rather than 13, was a BIG deal).
* Used to help me chase & catch gclark so I could kiss him when I was in lurve with him. (I think I was 4 or 5 years old at the time, and for the record, gclark’s two sisters also helped with the chasing and catching; poor guy was helplessly outnumbered).
* Calls & wakes me up early on weekend mornings to ask me my shoe size because she was at a street market in Manhattan, and they had these adorable little china girl slippers, and they only cost $4, so she’s going to buy some & send them to me but she needs to know my shoe size first, so what is it? (Actual conversation.)
* Is one of those types of people who you want to hate because she’s smart, successful and beautiful, but you can’t because she’s just so damn nice.

…and too many other things to mention. Happy birthday, Tracy!
