happy day

Very, very good news: Dave is flying home today! A whole entire day early! Hoooray!!!

He told his boss that I was showing “early signs” – which I suppose is true if you count all of these Braxton-Hicks contractions that I’ve been having like crazy for the past few days – and his boss agreed that Dave should be home. (I believe his words were, “I really don’t want your wife to hate me for the rest of your career.” Ha.) Honestly, I’m not sure if all of these little contractions are a sign that anything is happening at all, but I know they were making Dave (and me) nervous. I’ll feel much better having him nearby.

Not-so-good news: We got somewhere close to 6 inches of snow last night. We didn’t lose power, so I really have nothing to complain about, I’m just a bit nervous about the fact that I’m about to have to get in my car and drive to the airport to pick Dave up. I’m not so worried about myself – I’ve lived in snowy climates before (hello, Worcester, Massachusetts! I hated living in your city!), and I feel pretty safe with my little Subaru’s four wheel-drive. I just worry about other people on the roads, because Seattleites aren’t famous for being great drivers.

Last night I was supposed to go meet up with the girls for dessert, which I was really looking forward to. Just a chance to get out of the house for an hour or two and remind myself of the good old days when I felt like normal, functional human being, you know? We ended up cancelling our get-together because of the snow, which was probably wise. But still, kind of a bummer.

Later that night, I was talking to my mom and she said, “So, if you go into labor right now, when you’re alone and it’s snowing out, you DO know to call an ambulance to come get you and that you shouldn’t try to drive yourself, right?” Um, thanks, Mom! I hadn’t even thought of that possibility until you mentioned it! Now I think I might put 911 on speed dial, just in case. Sheesh.

But seriously, I was thinking about how insane this winter has been: the flood in November, the windstorm last month, and now this snowstorm. (I know six inches of snow doesn’t seem like much to most people, but it’s practically unheard of in this part of the country.) I just can’t imagine what’s next. What do y’all think, locusts or frogs? Maybe we should have people start placing bets now.

(Another quote from my mom, ever the optimist: “Hey, at least it hasn’t started raining blood yet!” Um, yeah! Ok then. We’ll send up three cheers for the one plague we’ve managed to avoid so far.)

I did take a lot of photos of the snow this morning, because it was really beautiful. (I’m very conflicted about the white stuff: I love it as long as I can stay home and not go anywhere. If I have to drive in it? I’m not so much feeling the love anymore.) But I’ll get the pictures uploaded after I get back from retrieving my husband from the airport.

Aside to Shannon: Tell Gaby she can bloody well have all of our snow that she wants. It’s only January and I am so over winter. I’m ready for spring.

Update: Snow pictures are here. (Or you can click the photo below and go to the set.)

Also, Dave is now home. I’m happy.

whales and other wildlife

Our trip to San Juan Island was great. I’ve been having problems with my blog all day, but I finally got the pictures online. That might tell the story better than I can at this point. But to sum up: we saw a couple of bald eagles, many whales (I guess if you find one, you’ll probably find the whole pod, which is like 25-30 whales, and I think we saw at least two pods), we met a very friendly camel named Mona, and I personally encountered about 10,000 mosquitoes. The bed & breakfast where we stayed was very cool, but Dave and I were both happy to get home and sleep in our own bed last night.

And um… There’s other stuff to say, but I’m too tired and can’t think of whatever it was that I was going to say, so I’m just going to wrap this up. Go look at the pictures. Enjoy. The end.

pro wedding photos

We got our professional wedding photos last week, and I had quite a time getting them online. We opted not to spend however-much-extra to get all of the photos on a CD-ROM, which in retrospect we probably should have done. First, I scanned about 120 photos, and then I realized after the fact that the scanner glass was smudged, so well over half of the photos (any of the ones that had a lot of black in them – so basically, all of them with Dave and the other guys in tuxes) looked crappy, like someone had taken them through a window. Then we tried using the attachment that scans the negatives (yes, we have a very fancy, hifalutin scanner), but it took forever to scan them and they all turned out grainy. THEN, on Sunday, I realized that the scanner has a paper feeder attachment that allows you to quickly scan entire batches of photos. Um, DUH! So I got a ton of them scanned, and they’re all now posted in our online wedding album. They’re the photos numbered 3 through 144. Enjoy!

newlywed weekend excitement

As far as my plans for a big exciting weekend that would make for a great blog entry? Yeah, not so much. We went to a little local festival, which was sort of interesting in a “gee, they have funnel cake, but no ferris wheel, what gives?” kind of way. We sat around and people-watched for a while, listened to a semi-OK band, and ate junk food. Then we went home and took a nap. The end. After we woke up, we went shopping and bought a bike rack that will fit on both of our cars – yay! And then it rained for the rest of the weekend so we couldn’t actually ride our bikes – boo!

Sunday, Dave didn’t feel well, so I went shopping by myself. Through the wonders of discount stores, I managed to find myself a nice little summer wardrobe collection for a relatively small amount of money. So that was fun. Then I came home and cleaned (well, not really, I just moved stuff out of the way for the housekeeper, who comes tomorrow) while simultaneously watching “Raising Helen“. Has anyone else seen this? I’m still not sure if I liked it or not. Then, Dave and I went to the supermarket (oooh, see what an exciting, fast-paced life we lead?) and rented that Lemony Snicket’s thing. I think two movies in one day about children who are orphaned after both parents are killed in some horrible freak accident is a bit too much for me. During the second movie, I started making plans in the back of my mind of who will take custody of my as-yet-unconceived children, should Dave and I die in a car accident or a fire or whatever. Because you know what? My kids are not going to end up with either Jim Carrey OR Kate Hudson, and that’s final. Maybe Billy Connolly. But we’ll see.

In other news… Well, there isn’t much other news, except that I don’t feel well today. Dave had some co-workers from out-of-state visiting last night, so he had to go out to dinner with them and do the whole corporate entertainment thing. And since I knew I wouldn’t be able to fall asleep without him, I took 2 over-the-counter sleep aids instead of my usual one. (Awww, isn’t that sweet? Seriously, it’s not like he has to be in bed with me for me to fall asleep, I just get freaked out when I’m in the house by myself. I know I’ve mentioned this before.) So today I have this weird, fuzzy, Tylenol PM-induced hangover, and it’s basically impossible for me to concentrate on anything. Fun! Only 3 hours left of my workday. Sigh.

P.S. I’ve added some more photos to the rehearsal & wedding albums, courtesy of my mom. Unless you’re in them, you probably won’t care. But hey, this is the best picture I have so far of my dress, at least until I get the pics from our wedding photographer. Enjoy.

wedding pics

Wedding pictures are now posted. Whee! And in honor of Sally’s brother, who takes some awesome food pictures, we have a few of our own here, including cake, something that on the menu was referred to as “whole decorated salmon” (and boy, were they not kidding), a dinner roll that got thrown all over the reception hall, and fun with fruit. And frighteningly enough, this isn’t even all of our photos, I’m still waiting for a few people to email me theirs. Oh, and then there’s the photographer we paid, who should be sending me her 400+ photos sometime in the next month or two. Enjoy!

more pics & other stuff

I just got my cousin Alphagal’s pictures from the rehearsal dinner uploaded. I have a lot of wedding photos from her too (as well as my sister), but I need to sort through them all so I can make a little online wedding photo album. It’s coming soon, I promise.

In other news, we got a new car this weekend! We had to get rid of Dave’s insanely expensive car that we couldn’t afford, so we got the new Subaru Tribeca instead, which is very cool. I’ll spare you the nerdy details (you can read them on Subaru’s website, if you like), but it has lots of neat little gadgets which immediately made Dave fall in love with it. It’s very spaceship-y – he can practice his best Captain Kirk impression while he’s driving it. (“Khaaaaaaannn!!!!”) So that’s happy. Of course, test-driving cars all weekend prevented us from making it to a theater to see the new Star Wars movie, but hopefully we’ll be able to do that sometime this week.

In blog-related news, I’ve tweaked my sidebar a bit, rearranged some stuff, added a link to Dooce (who, incidentally, I found by random blog-hopping and it turns out that she went to high school with best friend Kris and guy friend Chris G – and she’s a very funny, clever writer, which is why I’m linking to her), and I’ve added a little mood-of-the-day icon, courtesy of unkymoods. I think it’s cute. Hope y’all like. Happy Monday!

pics

Round one of the pictures from the rehearsal dinner are up and running. These are just my sister’s photos, I know there are a lot more from other various family members who were taking pictures that day. I also have some wedding photos, which are mostly scary (my maid-of-honor apparently didn’t get her camera out until I had consumed a few glasses of champagne and was not looking my absolute bridal best), but again – I should be getting some more very soon. Will keep you posted.
