more job news!

Ok, this is why I never put in a link to my new company, because I had a feeling that something like this would happen, and I didn’t want any of my co-workers to dig up my website like they did at the last place (hi, Karyn!) and find out about this ahead of time. Here’s the deal: on my last day at my last job, I got an email from a company that I interviewed with 2 months ago — since I hadn’t heard back from them, I had assumed that I didn’t get the job. Wrong! They’re just slow in the hiring process, apparently. But they wanted to set up another interview with me. Keep in mind that this happened on Friday the 19th & I was supposed to start the new job on Monday the 22nd. This was a really awesome opportunity with a great company (oooh, I am dying to put in the link here so y’all can see how impressive they are, but I won’t), and although under ordinary circumstances I would’ve just said “no thanks, I’ve accepted another offer,” I knew I couldn’t turn this one down. So I set up the interview, which was last Wednesday (my 3rd day of working here, for those of you keeping track). They called me yesterday & offered me the job.

It’s such a cool company, they actually work as a consultant for Microsoft with some of their enterprise customers, so I’d be working on 3000+ user networks, which is bigger than anything I can even imagine. And they’re international. I’ll be west coast-based, so I can stay in Seattle, but I may have to travel to San Francisco, L.A., Phoenix & Denver. (Cool!) The first project they want me to work on is a rollout of MS Operations Manager (MOM) 2005, which isn’t even available to the public yet, but because these guys work with Microsoft, they get to test & deploy all of this stuff before anyone else. (I know this is totally boring to a lot of you, but oh-my-god this kind of thing is enough to make me all a-quiver with joy.) And the project is downtown and will last at least 9 months, so that gives me a justifiable excuse to move into the city, which I’ve been wanting to do for a while. Oh, and the benefits package… Well, I won’t get into all that, but I must say that it totally kicks ass.

So obviously, I had to give my notice at my job today, after only being here for a week & a half. And I feel like such a flake doing that, because I never would’ve started here if I knew I was going to be leaving so soon. And there was basically no good spin that I could put on it, I knew I was just going to look like a really crappy employee and I just kept apologizing for the whole situation. My boss was surprisingly nice about it and even congratulated me on the new job. I told her I can stick around for 2 weeks while she finds a replacement, and she said she appreciated that. Kind of odd that my notice is actually longer than my time as an employee.

Anyway, YAY!

Oh, and an update, per Sally’s request: I ended up emailing Miata-boy and telling him that things were starting to get serious with one of the other guys I was seeing. Which is a complete lie, and I was totally chicken shit about it by emailing him & not having the nerve to say it in person or even over the phone. But I rationalized this by thinking that since we only went out twice, and the only physical contact we shared was one very quick, awkward hug at the end of the 2nd date, I didn’t really owe him an in-person explanation or anything like that. He was nice about it. He’s a sweet guy, just a little too much of a car dork for me. So instead, on Friday night, I got Greek take-out with Nate & we watched that Cate Blanchett/Tommy Lee Jones movie “The Missing.” It was good. And thus ends the brief cameo of Miata-boy in the story my life.

is it Friday yet?

My web site has been freaking out and I have no idea why. I suppose I should probably get a more reliable web host. Perhaps someone who actually answers my phone calls & emails when I have problems, but I just got the cheapest guys possible. Probably not the wisest move on my part.

I’m really liking my new job so far. It’s been kind of exhausting, as I suppose transitions often are, but it’s fun. The people that I work with are all really nice, and I have a feeling that I’m going to like it there. So yay, that’s all happy.

In other news, I have a date tomorrow with Miata-boy that I am dreading because I don’t know how to tell him that I am just not feeling it for him. He’s a perfectly nice guy, there’s just no spark. I think it’s probably easiest to lie & say that things have started getting serious with someone else that I’ve been seeing — which is totally not true, but he knows that I’m dating a lot, and I think it might be a little less ego-bruising if it’s just timing/circumstance and not because I think he’s sort of dull. So I’m working on a way to bring that up. I’m almost wondering if I should tell him over the phone & just cancel the date. It’s not like I’m looking forward to it, I think movies are typically a bad date idea because it doesn’t allow for much interaction, and we don’t have the same taste in movies at all. He wants to go see that new Tom Hanks flick, and just the commercials make me nauseous. (Sorry, the whole Colonel Sanders thing does NOT look amusing to me whatsoever.) And for some reason I really want to see Dawn of the Dead — I don’t usually do horror flicks, but Ebert & Roeper gave it 2 thumbs up, and it’s got Mekhi Phifer in it, who’s just… yum. In any case, I think I need to just get some nerve & give this guy his walking papers.

And on the topic of me not being spineless, I actually broke down & called the former co-worker who asked me out on my last day. It’s been almost a week, and he hasn’t called. Ordinarily I would just blow that off, but I figured that if he was too shy to ask me out before the absolute last minute, he might be too shy to pick up the phone & call me. So I made the first move, which I hate doing. I got his voicemail. I left a very short message, and now it’s his turn. If he doesn’t call me back within the next couple of days, I guess I’ll write him off. We’ll see.

Oh, and my favorite quote of the day, which I got from Scott’s blog, and I am so stealing it:

“Yo momma’s so lost, Google can’t find her.”

happy ending

So what, you may ask, is the perfect way to finish up your last day at a job? Well, getting to leave 2 hours early is nice. And having all of your co-workers wish you well and be totally cool about your leaving is also cool. But I have to say, the most awesome thing is having one of your now-former co-workers catch up with you in the parking lot & ask you out now that you don’t work together anymore. It’s funny, I had been told that this guy was interested in me ages ago, but I didn’t really buy it. So I guess it’s true. It’s just odd because we’ve never had a real conversation, and I don’t know if we have that much in common. We’ve mostly just exchanged “hi”s” and other niceties, but he did compliment me when I got my hair cut a couple of months ago, and again when I got my glasses. So what the hell, he’s cute and seems like a really nice guy, why not give it a shot?

The rest of the weekend has been pretty low-key. I had dinner with Nate on Friday night — I don’t think I’ve ever spent $8 on a margarita before, but man it was yummy. (Mmmm…. mango.) And last night I had a date with a new guy, who seemed very nice but very nervous. Which I don’t get because I don’t think I’m intimidating at all, but who knows, maybe he’s like that around all women at first. I had a good time, but I don’t know if there’s anything really there. I guess it all depends on whether or not he wants to go on a second date with me — right now I seem to be in a phase of going on lots of first dates & then never hearing from these dudes again. And that’s fine, I haven’t felt enough of a spark with anyone to really feel rejected when they don’t call again.

But enough about the dating thing, now I’m just getting myself all relaxed & mentally psyched to start the new job tomorrow. I’m excited.

Oh, and happy birthday to Miss Naina Sexpot, one day late.

sleepy but happy

I had the most awesome weekend ever, and I’m completely exhausted, so this recap is going to be short. First, I had really great Mexican food with Nate on Friday night, then chilled for the rest of the evening. Saturday, I did NOTHING all damn day (ahhh, bliss), then went dancing with Krissy on Saturday night. That was cool too — Krissy ditched me, which is her usual habit when we’re in bars/clubs together, and then I find her a couple of hours later, 3 sheets to the wind and kissing some strange man. That part was pretty much par for the course, but instead of getting pissy when she ditched me, I just flirted with all kinds of different boys & had the best time chatting with people. I also danced more than I have danced in probably at least two years. Of course, I didn’t get in bed until 6 a.m. (ouch), and my knee is swollen and hurting because of all the bouncing around in high heels that I did (double ouch), but I had a great time.

And then, the absolute pinnacle of my weekend: Sunday night at The Moore with Henry Rollins. Sigh. God, how I love that man. The surprise was that Henry chose Seattle as the city where he wants to film his DVD for this tour, which we didn’t know until we got inside & saw all the cameras. And thanks to the amazing rock star seats that Scott got us (6th row center, thank you very much), it’s entirely possible that we’re going to be on this DVD when it comes out because they were filming lots of “crowd reaction” type shots. I’m buying it regardless, just because I WAS THERE, DAMMIT!! I mean, how cool is that??

Anyway, I have a date tomorrow. This is the same guy from last week who is perfectly nice but I’m not sure I’m compatible with him. He doesn’t seem to have very much in the way of life experience, and he seems a bit obsessed with his car (which is a Miata, btw), so I’m not at all sure that we mesh very well. But he seems ok and he’s easy to talk to, and I’m trying really hard to be open-minded. So we’ll see. Wish me luck.

afternoon delight

The date last night wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it would be. We had an easy flow of conversation, and he seems nice enough, kinda cute, etc. I still don’t think we have that much in common, so I doubt that there’s enough there to make a relationship, but he seems ok. I had a good time, which I suppose is all that matters.

Nothing going on at work this afternoon, so I decided to take off a few hours early. I have a whole bunch of vacation hours that are going to get tossed down the tubes after next week anyway, so I figured I might as well use up a few of them. So I get to go run my errands — Target, grocery store, etc. — earlier than I thought I would, which is cool. It’s really a beautiful day outside, I like that I have some time off to enjoy it.

Friend plug: Adam’s website Tattoodles was featured in Prick Magazine recently. (Which is about tattooing, not the other kind of prick.) There’s a really good picture of him at the beginning of the article too. Yay publicity!

Not much going on right now. Sort of in the whole “getting prepared to leave one job & start another” phase. Lots of stuff needs to be wrapped up at the present (soon to be former) job, and lots of paperwork needs to be filled out for the future job. Last night I had to go take a pre-employment drug screen. Whee.

I have a date with a new guy tomorrow night. I’m kind of dreading it, our two phone conversations haven’t had a very good flow and I just don’t think we have all that much in common. I’m only going because I couldn’t think of a reasonable enough sounding excuse to NOT go. I’m trying to keep an open mind & all that, but it’s hard. I seem to be going out with lots of guys who are totally not my type — I think my screening process needs a bit more work. I’m just not feeling much of a *click* with anyone these days. Which is probably fine, I’m about to embark on a major transition in my life, and maybe one at a time is enough. We’ll see.

argentinian snowcones

I had a date last night. I was still annoyed about not having anything to do this weekend, so when one of the online personals guys asked me out at the last minute, I said yes, even though I worried that it made me look desparate (or at the very least, like I have no life). Anyway, we arranged to meet up at the Buenos Aires Grill in downtown Seattle. It was his suggestion, and I think he was trying to impress me with his knowledge of obscure hole-in-the-wall restaurants, but I’ve actually been there before. (I think he was bummed when I mentioned that.) So I get there and we have some drink called a caparinia or a capahrini or something like that, which the bartender describes to me as an Argentinian snowcone. It was basically a margarita without the tequila aftertaste. I didn’t know the alcohol that they used instead, but it was good. Sweet lime drinks. I’m a fan.

The restaurant was packed and we weren’t going to be able to get a table for an hour & a half, and the wait staff kept bumping us when they’d tango by (literally, they have designated tango dancers that go around the perimeter of the restaurant to entertain the diners — a waiter will just grab a waitress & then they’re off), so we left. We went to Kell’s, which is my favorite Irish pub in Seattle. We sat & had appetizers and talked for a while. He seems like a nice guy, but I don’t think I got that much out of him. It felt pretty one-sided, with me being all bubbly & funny and telling stories, and with him just kind of taking it in but not really contributing anything. Also, he’s 10 years older than me & divorced (no kids), which shouldn’t be a big deal, but for some reason it kind of bothers me. It’s like there’s not as much that we can relate to because we’re practically different generations. Is that age-ist of me? Maybe, I don’t know. He asked if he could see me again & I said yes, although I’m not sure why. I guess I’ll give it one more shot & see if I feel differently about him next time. Or at least I’ll feel a little more sure of my decision when I conclude that he’s not for me.

New season of “The Sopranos” starts tonight. Whee!
