Good Thursday

I got the glasses on Wednesday. They’re pretty cute, although I seem to be fidgeting with them a lot. I’m just not used to having something on my face all the time, it feels weird. I guess it just takes a while to get used to it.

The date on Thursday, with the New Scott, was a lot of fun. We just had dinner, nothing spectacular, but he’s a very funny guy and I really enjoyed talking with him. The Indian restaurant we went to was kind of odd — it’s usually one of my favorite places, but I guess I typically go during the day when there’s a buffet. I didn’t realize just how many waiters work there, and they always seem to be hovering nearby. You’d take a sip of your water, and instantly the guy with the water pitcher would be there refilling your glass. It was almost like they were trying to eavesdrop on our conversation, but they were doing it to everyone. It became comical after a while because it seemed like we were constantly being interrupted by a Looming Waiter. Anyway, he said he’ll call me, so I guess I’ll have to wait & see. But I hope he does, I’d like to go out with him again.

Overall, Thursday was a really good day for me. I actually stopped on my way home & bought a lotto ticket, which I’ve never done before. I guess I was just feeling strangely optimistic for whatever reason. Now I have to wait for the lottery web site to update to find out if I won the Mega Millions. Ha.

Tomorrow, I’m getting up at the buttcrack of dawn to drive Nate to the airport. And I’m taking care of his kitties for the next 5 days. That’s how good a friend I am. Well, that and he said he’d buy me dinner.

here we go…

I had internet date #1 on Sunday. We met at Starbucks for green tea (I know, how very Seattle is that?). He was a very nice guy and I enjoyed talking to him, but I didn’t catch a real “spark” vibe or anything like that. I wouldn’t object to going out with him again — he was perfectly polite & all that, but I have a feeling it probably won’t happen. At the end of it, he walked me to my car & shook my hand and said it was nice to meet me. No “let’s do this again sometime” or “I’ll call you” or any of that. And it’s been 2 days & I haven’t heard from him, so I’m writing it off. No biggie, he wasn’t really my type anyway.

Date #2 is on Thursday evening. It’s another guy named Scott, naturally. 🙂 It occurred to me that if I start dating this guy, it could potentially get very confusing. I’ll have to come up with nicknames for them or something. And the nicknames can’t be job related because they’re both developers (again, naturally). It reminded me though, back in college, we had a “Good Scott” and a “Bad Scott”. Bad Scott was this alcoholic jerk who somehow manipulated both my best friend & I into dating him (at different times), and tried to play us against each other to make us fight. We figured out the game pretty quickly & that’s how he became Bad Scott, or Ratboy (the 2 names are interchangeable). Good Scott was this beautiful boy with the longest eyelashes I’ve ever seen, who sat behind me in French class & played with my hair (note to guys: this is a good way to make girls fall in love with you), and he occasionally went dancing with me & my friends on 80’s Retro Night. He drove a bitchin’ Camaro. It was green. I had the huuuugest crush on him, and he just thought of me as a buddy. Sigh. Story of my life…

Ok, back to my date. So this new Scott (hmm, new Scott & old Scott? No, that doesn’t work…) called me last night and we talked for about an hour & a half. It was one of the most fun phone conversations I’ve had in quite some time. So I’m optimistic, we’ll see. We’re going out for Indian food on Thursday night. I don’t know if Indian is the best cuisine choice for a first date, but I guess it makes for an easy (albeit gross) excuse if one of us wants to bail on the evening suddenly.

Hmm… Maybe Scott G. will have to become Boogie Scott since he’s always dancing. That seems appropriate. 🙂

candy hearts & booze

Last night was a lot of fun. We got a bit of a late start because Krissy & I both had some wardrobe/hair issues, and by the time we got to Seattle, Scott was saying that he was going to wimp out because he was tired. Luckily he had also invited his friend Brian, who made fun of him & called him an old man until he (shamefacedly) agreed to come out with us. He didn’t stay long because he wasn’t feeling well, but I was really glad he showed up. So Scott put himself in a cab & went home, but Brian stuck with us the whole night, and that was awesome because he’s a really funny guy after you get a couple of drinks in him. He’s probably funny without the alcohol too, I just haven’t spent that much time around him in non-alcohol-related settings. In any case, Krissy ditched me like she usually does when we go out — I found her dry humping a bald gay man in the pool table room upstairs, then she was kissing an allegedly straight man (I have my doubts) near the bar downstairs, then she was dancing on the stage. This type of thing usually annoys the hell out of me, but since I had someone else there to chat with (and to make fun of Krissy with), it wasn’t so bad.

Since it was Valentine’s Day, it was a red-and-white themed evening — even the go-go boys that were dancing in the cages on the 2nd floor were wearing either red or white hot pants with matching mesh tank tops. Very cute. They gave out boxes of those little candy hearts with the messages on them when you paid your cover, and there were tons of boxes of them lying around everywhere. That became a major source of entertainment later in the evening when we got the munchies — Brian & I ate TONS of candy hearts, making fun of the messages on them before we chowed them down.

So finally we left Neighbours, dropped Brian off at his place, then Krissy & I stopped to grab food at the Five Point Cafe before we headed back to the eastside. A very hot guy asked Krissy & I to join him & his friends, and we did, because they were cute & there was nowhere else to sit, but they turned out to be really stupid & obnoxious. They’re minor league baseball players from Portland, and I guess that makes them special. Woo-hoo, whatever. They kept trying to get us to go back to their hotel to “party” with them after we ate. I was suddenly hit by a wave of exhaustion and realized that I had no idea what time it was. I looked at my watch. It was 4:30 a.m. Yep, time for us old folks to pack it in & call it a night. We politely declined the party invitation (not that I would’ve gone with these guys even if I had more energy, they struck me as more than slightly creepy), and we headed home. Krissy slept on my futon and just left a little while ago. Now I’m trying to get up the energy to get dressed & go about my day.

Overall, though, this was one of the most fun Valentine’s Days I’ve had yet. Definitely in the top five.

strange workout phenomena

This evening, I happened to be in downtown Seattle when I finished up at my last client’s site, and since my gym bag was already in the car and my membership allows me to go to all branches, I thought I’d give the downtown Seattle branch a shot. Wow. It’s huuuuuuge. It’s 3 stories, I only saw 2. I’m pretty sure it’s only stationary bikes & group exercise classes on the third floor, neither of which interest me. Couple of weird things I noticed:

(1) This gym had way more mirrors than my usual branch. And I think I’ve figured out why no one ever talks to me at the gym. I kept catching glances of myself in the mirror, and I looked thoroughly pissed off. I wasn’t, but apparently that’s my concentrating-on-the-task-at-hand face. I once caught myself in the reflection of a window with the exact same look on my face when I was changing planes at the airport. And as much as I try to focus on relaxing my face muscles so I don’t look so angry, I can’t do it. My face relaxes when the workout is over, and not a moment sooner.

(2) What the hell is up with middle-aged women who think it’s perfectly acceptable to stand around naked in the ladies’ locker room? THIS IS NOT OK!!! I don’t care how great your body is, for your age or just in general. I don’t need to see your “woo” (to use my sister’s term), so cover it up! Last week when I was at the gym, a woman stood in the locker room, blow-drying her hair & reapplying her make-up, the whole time wearing her sweater (& I assume a bra under it), shoes, and NOTHING ELSE!! She was like that when I first got there, and she was still like that 10 minutes later after I had changed into my gym clothes (in the private dressing room, thank you very much), put my hair up, and had gotten my walkman & water bottle ready. How on earth can someone be completely exposed from the waist down (except for her feet), and be comfortable like that? I just don’t get it. And it’s never women my age that do this, it seems to be exclusively limited to the 45-and-older crowd.

In a totally unrelated topic, I’ve gotten 8 responses to the online personal ad in the past 24 hours. One guy actually called me a “hottie”. Awww yeah. I also got one from a guy who’s stationed down at Fort Lewis in Tacoma, but right now he’s in Baghdad. That one made me a little sad. He said he’ll be back in April, and even though he’s probably not the type of guy that I would date, I really hope that he is. I wrote him back & told him to get home safely.

lord help me

So, I’ve been thinking about it for a while and I’ve decided to give the online dating thing another shot. I’ve met a few incredible guys this way (Nate & Scott in particular) that I’m still friends with, so I figured what the hell. At the very least, it should make for some great “bad first date” stories. Stay tuned, folks. Both drama and comedy are just around the corner.

I'm too sexy for my… eh?

Apparently I must be giving off some kind of weird pheromone. Here’s the recap of the random male attention I’ve been getting for the past few days.

* Saturday night – (1) Doorman at the bar that Krissy & I went to was VERY flirty with me. Like way too flirty for a guy who doesn’t get tips. He complimented my shoes. Hmmm. (2) Three different bartenders were all very flirty, which isn’t that surprising because that’s how they get tips, so they probably do that with all girls. So I didn’t put too much stock into that one. (3) Two really sketchy Turkish carpet salesmen (I swear I’m not making that up) told me that I had beautiful lips and that I smelled good. Uh… ok.

* Sunday – At my most low-maintenance (minimal make-up, nothing going on with the hair, jeans, sneakers & an old boring sweater), this little old man in the grocery store asked me if I was born in Tennessee. I was really confused, thinking “can people tell by looking at me that I was born in the south??” So I told him no, I was born in Mississippi. He said, “Well, you’re the cutest ten I see.” Note to all of my male friends: You must be at least 75 years old before you can pull off this line and not have women roll their eyes at you.

* Today (Monday) – (1) Got the flirty vibes from one of my male customers, which isn’t that big a shock because he & I have had flirty vibes since I started going there a couple of months ago. Today we talked about our pets. He has a puppy. (2) Found out that one of the guys in my office has been asking about me. I won’t say who or how I found out because I was sworn to secrecy, but I honestly thought this guy was gay, so needless to say that shocked the hell out of me.

Maybe it’s the new haircut? I can’t imagine. Very strange.

back on the market

Scott & I sort of “broke up” last night. I say “broke up” in quotes because it was quite possibly one of the nicest, most grown-up ends to a relationship that I’ve ever witnessed. Seriously, there was no profanity, no crying, no throwing empty bottles of vodka at the other person’s head (ok, that only happened once…). I think we’ve both known for a while that things weren’t really working between us romantically, and it’s a testament to how much we genuinely care about each other that we tried to work it out for as long as we did. He is, without a doubt, one of the coolest people I’ve met since I moved out here — he’s smart, he’s funny, he totally gets me — and I think he’s definitely going to remain one of the most important people in my life. We’re just taking the whole dating element out of the equation, but we’re still going to spend time together. He’s coming over tomorrow night for dinner and “Sex & the City” reruns, as is our usual Tuesday night routine, so I really do think things are going to be ok.

So, am I bummed that things didn’t work out? Sure. Am I totally heartbroken & devastated? Nah. I think we’re both going to escape from this relatively unscathed and better friends for having gone through it.

Oh, but just for the record, this is staying true to my 2-month relationship track record, which I’m not entirely happy about. It feels like some kind of weird jinx that was put on me in college that’s stuck with me through the years. Maybe it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy at this point, who knows. Oh well, this one made it to 2 months & 4 days, so maybe that’s an optimistic sign for next time. 🙂

P.S. That subject line is a total joke. I’m not ready for the market just yet, I’m going to need some recuperative downtime first. I think it’s safe to say the Match.com subscription won’t be renewed for a while yet.
