dilated pupils

I had my eyes checked today. For the past couple of months, I’ve been getting sort of weird headaches behind my eyes, and it’s been about 5 years since my last check-up, so I figured it was time. Turns out I’m far-sighted, and I need glasses. Which is no big deal, I don’t have any weird self-image hang-ups about them making me less attractive or anything like that. If anything, I think it’ll work with my “nerdy girl” image.

Then, of course, they wanted me to pick out frames to get my glasses, but my pupils had been dilated so I couldn’t see anything in the mirror except a distorted blur of my face, and my mascara was shot from the eyedrops, so even if I had been able to see, I think I probably would’ve thought that I looked like crap… So I had them give me my prescription and I’ll worry about the frames later. But at least I got the exam part over & done with. I had to call Nate to come pick me up because I was scared to drive while everything was blurry. I slept it off for a couple of hours, then he came & got me, and took me back to get my car.

Tonight, in honor of Valentine’s Day, Krissy & I decided to go to Neighbours, because we figured that there’s no better place than a gay bar for two single straight girls on this particular evening. Then Scott called, and I coerced him into coming along with us. I figure that if we have to be forced to witness any public displays of affection, at least it won’t be from guy-girl couples. So let’s recap: I’m going to a gay bar with my crazy drama-provoking friend and my ex-boyfriend. On Valentine’s Day. Hmm. Should make for an interesting story, if nothing else.

Leadfoot the Upstairs Neighbor

A couple of weeks ago, I called my landlord to complain about my upstairs neighbor. He’s been kind of a problem for me ever since he moved in a few months ago. First there was the incident where he double-parked in front of all the visitor parking spots, so when Scott was trying to leave & maneuver around him, he backed into the concrete retaining wall & gave himself a flat tire. Ever since then, it’s been the noise. The constant, never-ending noise. I can’t imagine what he’s been doing up there. I thought maybe he was Dutch & wearing wooden shoes or something. There seemed to be a lot of clomping & banging going on. And every now & then there would be a bang so loud that it would scare Teenie out of her nap. So I asked my landlord if he would ask this guy to please keep it down.

Oh, Leadfoot also tends to throw things off of his balcony — mostly cigarette butts and the cellophane wrappers around the cigarette boxes — which inevitably seem to land on my balcony. And it grosses me out to pick up that stuff, so I asked the landlord to mention that too. He said he’d be sure to give the guy “a good talking to”.

So tonight, I took the trash out to the dumpster & stopped to get my mail on my way back. I ran into the landlord at the mailboxes, and he asked if the dude is still making racket. I said that I still hear him sometimes, but it’s gotten better (this is true). He said “Well, he just got a gym membership, so he shouldn’t be dropping any more barbells up there.” HUH??? The idiot was lifting weights and DROPPING the barbells even though he knew that someone lived below him?!?!! I mean, I’m glad that I know the source of the loud noises because I was starting to get concerned, but good grief. What a jackass.

I wanted to mention to the landlord that he should also tell the guy to put a pillow between his headboard & the wall because I’m tired of listening to him have frat-boy-jackrabbit sex with his little skank ho girlfriend when I’m trying to sleep. But my landlord is a little creepy and I didn’t really know how to bring up that subject & not feel icky about it. My mom said I should leave an anonymous note on Leadfoot’s front door about it (like “hi, I live in the same building as you, and the walls are thinner than you think, so….”). I’m thinking about going the passive route & just cranking the air filter up to “high” so I can drown them out.

boring

Not much going on this week. I’m only posting this because I feel like I should have something to say. Work is ok. Steadily getting over the cold. Birthday next week. What else is there?

Last night I saw Dave Matthews & Emmylou Harris on CMT “Crossroads”. Damn, that was good.

Oh yeah, and why am I watching CMT, you ask? Well, I heard on the radio that Dave was going to be on, which is the only reason why my remote paused for a moment on that particular station. But also, my cable box died earlier this week, so for the moment, I’m stuck with only 60-something channels. All my HBO’s and Encore’s are unavailable to me until a technician can come out & fix my box. (No dirty jokes, please.) That should be tomorrow, sometime between noon & 4:00. I can’t wait.

sick

I’ve had a cold since New Year’s Day, and I’m getting really tired of it. Bleah. And my washing machine is broken, so I’m washing things in the bathtub & then putting them in the dryer. Thank god I rent this place, so the landlord has to pay to fix it, not me.

In happier news, the final season of Sex & The City starts tonight, so I’m excited about that.

Oh, and earlier today I saw George Clooney’s butt in “Solaris”. Can’t get much better than that. Actually, I’m not sure if I liked the movie or not — it was kind of weird. But it shows the Clooney Butt, so it can’t be all bad.

strange days indeed

Things that happened today:
1. I got in a car accident. Very minor, one of those deals where everyone on the freeway slams on their brakes at once, and I did too, but I skidded & rear-ended the guy in front of me. No damage to his car (thank God, since it was my fault), but mine has a dent where his spare tire wheel bumped my hood. Oh well, could’ve been much worse.

2. I bought my fangs for Halloween. 🙂 I vant to dvink you blood….

3. I went to yoga & now I’m sore. Oh well, at least I did it.

4. I gave a Frito-Lay peanut butter & crackers thing to a homeless guy. I’m calling it my good deed for the day. My karma needs all the help it can get.

5. Shortly after said homeless person incident, I got a phone call which could potentially lead to something promising, but I’m not going to talk about for fear of jinxing it.

Thank god for Tylenol PM, otherwise I’d never get to sleep….

more problems with the dude upstairs…

This does not bode well for my future living scenario. Scott came over tonight, as is our usual Tuesday night ritual. I made salad & pizza (ok, “made” is a little strong — I bought them & put them on dishes, does that count?) and we watched old “Sex & The City” reruns. Once again, there was much noise coming from the apartment upstairs — this time it didn’t sound so much like thunder, it was just sort of a general racket.

Around 10:00, I kick Scott out because I have to go to bed. He’s gone for about 2 minutes when my cell phone rings. It’s Scott. He’s in the parking lot, and he’s blocked in. I go outside to see what the deal is. There’s a silver BMW that has basically double-parked at such an angle so that all of my little nook’s visitor parking spots (there are 4) are all blocked in. Scott, ever trying to be the sweet non-confrontational guy that he is, figured that he would just try to squeeze his car around the BMW and work his way out. In the process of trying to do this, he hits a concrete retaining wall & gives himself a flat tire. I figure I’ll try to make some racket to bring the owner of the BMW outside. I intentionally set off my own car alarm & lean on the horn. No response. Which figures, because I live within earshot of the intersection of 2 major freeways, and the apartments are pretty well insulated so you never hear all the road noise. So I try hopping on the beamer, figuring I might set off its alarm, which surely the owner would recognize. No luck (even when I jumped butt-first onto the hood).

Finally I decide I’ll go knocking door to door, starting first with the people whose lights are still on (it is after 10:00 on a Tuesday night, after all). I try the guy who lives next door to me. He comes to the door in his boxer shorts — the TV is on & he looks slightly stoned. He says he doesn’t know anything about a BMW. Fine. Then I realize that noisy dude upstairs has his lights on. I run up there & knock. Pause. No response. Knock again. I see a shadow in the window next to the door & I see the light behind the peephole go dark & then light again. Still no response. I yell “Hello?!?!!!” and finally he opens the door. This is not the old dude who used to live above me, much to my surprise. This is a young guy, probably in his early 20’s, kind of cute in a vacant-looking sort of way. Actually, something about him reminded me of my brother. This is not to imply that my brother is in any way a vacant guy — on the contrary, he’s a very deep, sensitive, kind, warm-hearted soul. But sometimes he gets a look on his face that makes you wonder if anyone’s home.

Anyway, turns out that Noisy Upstairs Guy is a new tenant (I caught a glimpse of a box spring on its side in the living room — I guess that explains the noise factor) and naturally, yes, he is also the owner of the BMW. He comes out & moves it, and apologizes for the inconvenience, which was nice. Then I sit in the parking lot with Scott while he changes his tire. Sitting, of course, being the only thing I can contribute to a tire-changing scenario. I have a cell phone & a AAA membership, but other than that, I’m not much help.

One thing that struck me is that Noisy Upstairs Guy seems really young to have that kind of car, I’m guessing it was a college graduation present from Mommy & Daddy. In any case, that double parking business is rude as hell, and he better watch his little beamer yuppie ass or he’s going to find a flaming bag of Teenie poop on his doorstep someday.

Yeah yeah, I know, I get grumpy when I’m sleep deprived.
