wednesday woes

Ok, so it’s Day 3 of this whole working-from-home gig, and I have to say that so far? I am not a huge fan of it.

Monday was the day that we kept Cate at home with us, and Dave and I tried to take shifts so that we could each get our work done. I would now like to laugh at myself for ever thinking that could work. Basically, when it’s Dave’s shift with the baby, I have to hide in my office, because if she so much as catches a glimpse of me, she will scream her ever-loving head off until I pick her up. And have I mentioned how it’s impossible for me to concentrate on anything if I can hear her crying? I know God gave us that Protective Mama Bear instinct for a reason, but man, sometimes I wish it had an off switch and I could just tune it out.

Tuesday and today, Cate’s been at daycare, which is good as far as my work productivity, but man, I hate leaving her there when she’s crying. It just rips my heart out. I know she’ll get over it as time goes on, but I’m not sure I will.

I just keep reminding myself of how much we really need this money – especially since our stupid adjustable-rate mortgage is about to go up again next month, and oh my god, I just want to finish getting this house fixed up (which, again, requires money) so we can get the hell out of here. And you better believe we will read every single word of every document before we sign another mortgage. Stupid AmeriQuest bastards.

Totally unrelated: I don’t know if I’ve ever mentioned it here, but my dad is not a big animal lover. When I was pregnant, I lost count of how many times he told me that we should get rid of all four cats before the baby was born. I told him that was ridiculous, because it’s not like we’re raising pit bulls here. When was the last time you read a story in the paper about a small child who was mauled by a housecat? It just doesn’t happen.

“What if one of them scratches her in the eye?” he said.

“Oh please, what are the odds of that?” I replied.

You see where this is going, right? This morning, Cate was playing happily in the bathroom with me while I was getting dressed. Teenie was lying on her side on the bathmat – because, you know, when Mama goes to the bathroom, everybody has to join the party. Cate crawled over to Teenie and tried to rub her face on the cat, like she always does. Teenie got up really quickly, and in the process of doing so, she scratched Cate across the cheek with one of her hind legs. It was a total accident, not malicious in any way on Teenie’s part, and in fact she ran and hid when Cate started to scream.

Luckily the scratch didn’t get her eye, it was just a couple of inches off. It was pretty minor, didn’t even break the skin. But just so I never have to hear “I told you so” from my dad, I’m going to avoid taking any pictures for the next couple of days until it heals completely. And hopefully he’ll never read this blog entry. (Not a big stretch, since I don’t think he ever reads this site anyway.)

And another random topic jump: it’s national delurking day, so say hi.

The Great Mofo Delurk 2007

how long has it been since I wrote a post about my hair?

Sorry the blog posts are so few and far between these days. It’s frustrating that every time I have a few baby-free minutes to write something, my web site is down. The tech support people at my sucky web hosts say that this isn’t related to comment spam, which is what they claimed it was last time. Now they’re saying it’s a server problem on their end, and they’re trying to fix it. Hmph. Apparently changing web hosts involves something to do with the exporting and importing of databases, so I’m waiting until Dave can help me with it because I know I will screw it up. Hopefully the fact that I mentioned it here will shame him into doing it sooner rather than later. (Thanks, sweetie!)

So, new topic…

At some point when my folks were here, my mom looked at me kind of hard and asked me how long it had been since my last haircut. I remembered that it had been about 6 months because I had gotten it cut right after Cate was born. My mom asked me if I would get it cut if she gave me the money for it, and I told her not to bother because I’d do it after I start working again and have a slightly more flexible cash flow.

Sure enough, the next day, I found my wallet on top of the diaper bag and some extra cash jammed in it. My mom is not very subtle, but I thought it was sweet of her. She knows how important it can be to feel cute when you’re a new mom and everything else on you looks like crap on a stick. Might as well have sassy hair, right?

So, I decided that it was time for a change, and I went ahead and had my stylist whack several inches off. I told her that I wanted it to be low-maintenance, and long enough that I can still get in a ponytail. This is why I adore her, because she can take a totally vague description of what I want and turn it into something I love.

Behold, the before picture:

And the after:

I’m quite happy with it. And I can still get it in a ponytail, so hooray for that.

In other news, today we met up with my friend Janet and her baby at the park, and gave Cate another try on the swings. She didn’t like it all the first time, but today she seemed to enjoy herself for a few minutes, so I guess that was an improvement. It was a fun afternoon.

P.S. Happy birthday to my sister, who’s turning 29 tomorrow. For like the 8th time.

irritating

I am so very, very tired of trying to view my own website and coming up with some stupid internal server error. I’ve talked to my web host people about it – apparently it’s because of comment spam, which my spam filters are catching, but somehow it still manages to crash my site. Yadda yadda, boring technical junk, blah. Point is, I think I have to find a new website host because these jerks are not helping me. If you have any recommendations, let me know.

In the meantime, if you try to come here and get a stupid error message, I’m sorry and I hope to have the problem fixed soon.

claim to fame

Today, an internet rock star held my baby:

Amanda is a total sweetheart, just super-nice and easy to talk to. And her kids are gorgeous. Genoa is so cute, and constantly on the move – she wants to walk, walk, walk everywhere. Alex is really funny, and way chattier than I expected. Most kids I know don’t really talk to adults, but he has no problem with that. And I learned quickly that I don’t speak Little Boy – he mentioned something about a crane, and I thought he meant a bird. Um, no. Construction equipment, duh. I suppose that if I ever have a little boy, I’m going to have to learn that stuff pretty quickly.

Oh, and I now have a major case of Camera Envy. And Christmas is a loooong way off. Rats.

There’s not much else to report. Monday, Cate and I lounged around the hotel and did nothing while Dave was at work. Yesterday, mommy & baby drove around to explore some more neighborhoods, and that night we all went to dinner with my aunt. It’s always fun to catch up with people in my family, so that was a good time.

Oh, the story I forgot to tell. So, we’re staying at an Embassy Suites. If you’ve ever been inside one, you know they’re all the same: a big center atrium with rooms all around the perimeter, and 4 elevators – two in front and two in back. After we first checked in and got our luggage to our room, Dave and Cate went to lie down for a nap, and I went back to the car to haul in our stash of groceries (the perk of having a mini-fridge in the room).

I noticed that there were about a dozen or so kids on various floors, running around the perimeter hallway. I didn’t think anything of it until I was trying to get on an elevator to go downstairs. It took well over five minutes to get an elevator, and when it finally stopped on my floor, it was going up instead of down. Fine, whatever. We’re on the fifth floor. A girl who was probably about twelve years old got on the elevator at the 6th floor, pressed the buttons for both 7 and 9, then jumped off at the 7th floor. Since she had also pushed the button for 9, I was confused and said, “um, what?” as she was getting off, and she kind of giggled and ran off. Little brat.

So that’s why the elevators were taking forever. The kids were jumping into an elevator, pressing a whole bunch of buttons, then jumping off at the next floor to run around to the other end of the atrium and do it all over again. Meanwhile, the elevator has to keep stopping at every floor. Either that or they’d hit the elevator call button and dash away, so it would stop at a floor and there would be no one there.

Another five minutes later, I’d had to stop on every. single. damn. floor. And I lost it. It had already been a long day, flying with the baby and everything, and I had just had enough. Finally, these two little boys got on the elevator. They were maybe 9 or 10 years old. As one of the kids reached for the buttons, I said in my best stern mother tone, “Don’t you dare touch a single button on that elevator.”

They both stopped dead and stared at me. I went on: “It has taken forever for me to get downstairs on this elevator, I am sick of this stupid little game you guys are playing. Where on earth are your parents? I’m telling the manager because this is bullsh*t.” Sometimes cursing in front of kids seems to be a pretty good way to get their attention. It worked, I’m pretty sure I scared the crap out of them.

And I wasn’t bluffing, I really did tell the manager. As I was coming back in with the groceries, I saw a couple of hotel security guards at one of the rooms. Since the kids were all around the same age and of various races (and because there were so many of them), I’m guessing that it was some sort of school or church trip, and the chaperones weren’t staying on top of things. Who knows. But I was kind of proud of myself for the fact that I was able to get children to listen to me. Whaddya know, apparently I’m really an adult. I’m also proud of myself for not hauling off and smacking them upside the head, because believe me, I was tempted.

not really a vacation, but…

Dave has to go to California for work next week. Seeing as our two-year anniversary is on Tuesday, and I didn’t love the idea of being alone in the boonies with the baby for a week, I decided that Cate and I would tag along with him. I already know that she does pretty well on planes, and it’s only a two hour flight, so why not? His company is paying for the hotel and the rental car, all we have to fork over is the plane fare (which really isn’t that bad from here to the Bay area). I’ll drop him off at work in the morning so Cate and I can have the rental car during the day, and oh, the fun we will have.

So, we’re flying out on Saturday (as in, the day after tomorrow), and coming back next Friday. Turns out that my cousin Cat is also in the Bay area this week for work, so we’ll get to see her, Tony and e-baby before they leave. Woo! Also on the agenda: dinner with my aunt, meeting up with a girlfriend from college, and I’m retardly excited that Cate and I have a playdate with the lovely and talented Amanda, who I’ve had a blog-crush on for years.

Of course, this also means that we’ll be out of town on my very first Mother’s Day, so my plans for the day will have to be postponed a week. (More on that later.) But that’s ok, we’ll just pretend that Mother’s Day is on the 20th instead of the 13th. Works for me.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have about 50 loads of laundry to wash, I need to get a copy of our house key made for the teenager across the street (she’s going to check on the kitties for us), and oh yeah, the baby is screaming. The fun never stops!

new look

I feel it’s time for a little bloggy makeover. Stay tuned…

Edited to add: Ok, it’s a bit boring, but I think I like the simplicity. And I need to go to bed. Maybe I’ll re-think it tomorrow. Any opinions in the meantime are welcome.

money money

A couple of weird things have come up in the last 24 hours: first, I got an email asking if I’d accept advertising on this site. It’s not something I’ve ever really considered, because I didn’t think that I had enough readers to warrant any advertisers’ interest. But hey, they asked, and I could really use that $2 a year or whatever piddly amount of web traffic I bring in. I wrote the person back, asking exactly what the content of the advertisements would be, because while I’m totally open to the idea of whoring my blog for my own personal financial gain, I don’t want to end up with anything obnoxious and/or offensive here.

Second, I got an email from a recruiter who happened to have an old copy of my resume. The job he’s looking to fill is right up my alley, and the salary and benefits are awesome. It sounds way better than what I was doing before. The only catch is that it’s full-time, which wasn’t what I had in mind. I was really planning on going for something either part-time, or that at least had the option to work from home part-time. So now I’m kicking this idea around, trying to figure out if this is what I want. I don’t like the idea of Cate being in daycare full-time, mostly because I think I’d miss her like crazy. But at the same time, this job opportunity could put us in a place financially where we could move to a new house sooner than our current plan, and while the commute would suck for now, the job is located in the area that I want to move to. So it could turn out to be really good. Or I could do it for a month, hate it, want to quit and feel like an idiot for going through the whole process of interviewing with this company and finding a suitable daycare facility. Argh, dilemmas…
