"I Made Freedom Count"

Guess what I did yesterday?

hooray for early voting
I like that caption, “I Made Freedom Count.” Made me laugh when they gave me the sticker.

North Carolina has early voting, which is pretty cool. I headed over while Cate was napping, since Dave was working from home. I had read all kinds of nightmare stories about long waits, screwy voting machines, whatever, so I went into it with great hesitancy. And really, it was totally undramatic. The wait was about 20 minutes, which was nothing (I had brought a book with me, so it went by quickly). North Carolina uses paper ballots, so no worries about computer glitches. And… yeah. That was it. Nothing to it, really. But it felt really good to fill in that bubble next to “Obama/Biden.”

[/end political talk]
Back to the toddler updates: we seem to have entered the Age of Elmo. I knew it was coming eventually – it seems to hit every toddler at some point – but it officially started yesterday. We were playing with Jillian, the little girl next door, and she had various Sesame Street characters on her sweatshirt. Cate pointed at Elmo and said, “MELMO!” Later when I was changing her diaper, she noticed Elmo on her diaper and said “Melmo, melmo, melmo!” It’s kind of weird since she only watches Sesame Street maybe once or twice a week at the most, but I’ve heard stories about how Elmo has sort of a magical gravitational pull on kids this age, so I’m not really surprised.

Today I took Cate with me to Target, and she started to have a total meltdown about halfway through the store. She wouldn’t ride in the cart, she wouldn’t walk, she didn’t want the Cookie Bribe, she didn’t want her sippy cup, she just wanted me to carry her, but when I did, she kept squirming because I wasn’t holding her at exactly the angle she wanted to be held. (Have you ever tried to hold a 28-pound toddler while pushing an overloaded shopping cart with one hand? It’s challenging.) Finally as I was making my way past the toy section, I spotted some Sesame Street toys. I grabbed a small Elmo doll, showed it to her, and it was like someone magically replaced my child with a new, happier model. For the rest of our trip, she walked happily through the store, holding onto “Melmo” and talking to him. I was thinking that I would just use the doll to distract her until we were done shopping, but I ended up buying it for her. Elmo only cost $5, and I figured it was worth it since he made her so happy.

Also: I really have to start bringing my camera outside with me more often. Cate is completely enamored with the older girls in the neighborhood, and the feeling is obviously mutual. Yesterday there were three girls serenading Cate with “Row Row Row Your Boat” over and over again to make her dance. And she did. For ages. They try to invent little games with her – they’ll say “ready, set,” which Cate knows is her cue to scream “GO!” and then they all fall down. It is seriously, seriously funny.

A few minutes ago, two of the girls, Rebecca and McKenzie (both of them are in the third grade, so they’re about 8-ish, I think?) knocked on the door to see if Cate could come out to play. I told them that she’s napping, but I’ll bring her out as soon as she wakes up.

enjoying autumn

In case I haven’t said it already: I love it here. I’m so happy that we moved when we did. I love this neighborhood, I love this house, I love that there’s a Super Target only a couple of miles from us, and I absolutely adore that there are so many kids around for my girl to play with. We are having so. much. fun.

Signing Time!

We’ve had a really fun weekend. Yesterday, Cate and I met up with Cat, Tony and e-baby for the Raleigh airport’s “open house” for their new terminal. I know, it’s kind of weird to go to the airport just for fun, but there was free food! And a guy wearing a Curious George costume! And… uh, I don’t remember what else, but the girls had lots of fun running around.

That afternoon, I chatted with my next-door neighbor while Cate played with some of the neighborhood kids. The older kids asked if they could rake the leaves in my yard. Um, YEAH! They only wanted to do it so they could jump in the leaf pile, but hey whatever, free labor, right? Cate kind of stayed out of their way to avoid getting trampled during all of the action, but after they were done, they raked the leaves out to the street for me, which was nice. And as soon as they all left to go home for dinner, Cate plopped herself down in the pile of leaves and then pulled them onto her lap in order to thoroughly bury herself.

Cate in the leaf pile

She had a great time and threw a huge fit when I dragged her inside twenty minutes later. (It was getting dark!)

Oh also, my next-door neighbor loaned me a couple of Halloween costumes that her kids have worn in the past, so I wouldn’t have to go buy Cate one. It was really sweet of her. I love this “101 Dalmatians” costume, but Cate seems to feel otherwise about it.

unhappy puppy

Luckily the other costume is totally adorable and she doesn’t seem to mind it, so I think that’s the one we’re going with. And I’m not telling you what it is or taking pictures yet, you’ll just have to wait and see.

Then the absolute best, best, BEST part of this weekend: today we went to our local Down’s Syndrome Association’s “Buddy Walk” fundraiser, and we got to meet Rachel, Alex and Leah from Signing Time!

OMG it's the Signing Time people!!

I don’t think Cate recognized them from the DVD’s at all. At the next booth over, she saw the Signing Time DVD’s on display and she got all excited, saying “sign, sign.” I said, I know, see? I pointed back over to the actual Signing Time people (who were taking pics with other people and totally ignoring us) and I sang the theme song from the DVD to try to get her to put the two together. She looked sort of confused, I honestly don’t know if she got it or not.

Anyway, Rachel was super-nice, and I told her she’s basically the Mick Jagger of our house, like the ultimate rock star. She clapped and said, “woo! I love it!” It was pretty awesome, my hands even shook because I was so excited to meet her. I know, I am a total geek. But it was a great day.

kiss my butt, Google Maps

Today was our friends Becky and Carrie’s wedding. I was so excited about this wedding; I’ve known both of them for over ten years, I just adore them and I’m so happy for them both. We left extra-early to make sure there was no way we’d be late (as we always are): the wedding was set to start at 1:30, and we left at 12:45. It should’ve only taken about 20 minutes to get there. Dave and I don’t really know our way around this area yet, so I had used Google Maps to get my driving directions there. That’s foreshadowing doom right there, in case you didn’t guess.

We set off, and we hit a little bit of road-construction traffic, but nothing major. Then we finally get to the area that Google said was our destination, and… no. The wedding was supposed to be in a restaurant (ceremony in a banquet hall upstairs, reception in the restaurant downstairs), but where we were? There was nothing but farmland all around us. So, um, WTF?

I figured that at least we were on the right street, so we’d just follow it down to the correct street number, and we’d be good. Only… it didn’t exist. Eventually we ended up in the next county, where the street changed names, and oh my hell, we are LOST. And sadly, the GPS in Dave’s car is pretty hit-or-miss right now, because we need to take it to a dealership and get the software upgraded. (It knows the Northwest really well, but its directions in North Carolina are sketchy at best.) It told us that the particular number on this street didn’t exist. Again: WTF?

We eventually figured it out, but we got there after 2:00, so we missed the entire ceremony. The only thing that kept me from bursting into tears over this is because I didn’t want to ruin my make-up.

But, you know, we made it. And I got to hug both of the brides and tell them how sorry I was that I had missed it, but I was so glad that I could be there on their special day.

(I sort of forgot to get a picture of both brides at the same time. Oops.)
(Oh, and the blonde on the far right of that first picture? That’s my ex-roommate who I hadn’t seen in over TEN YEARS! Crazy! It was so fun to see her and catch up.)

And Cate had a fantastic time running around the restaurant.

she LOVED the bench-style seating

Luckily she wasn’t the only kid there, and most people seemed to think she was cute and not obnoxious. We tried to rein her in as much as possible, but seriously, she’s kind of impossible to contain. Exhibit A: SPAZZ.

my happy little spazz

I swear, I don’t know where she gets all that energy. She didn’t inherit that from ME, I promise you. She took a short nap on the way home, and was rested and recharged in no time. We went for a walk around the neighborhood to let her burn off some more energy. Well, it was less of a walk and more of a run, really.

girl on the MOVE

I’m hoping that all the running she’s done today will help her sleep tonight. Please GOD, let her sleep. Yeesh.

random stuff, again

1. We headed back to the pediatrician today so the doctor could check to make sure Cate’s lungs are all clear. She also got a flu shot, which was no fun. I still really like this new pediatrician, although man alive, I am tired of doctor’s offices.

Oh, when the doctor checked her throat, he said, “Man, she has all kinds of teeth coming in back there.” Kind of nice to have official confirmation of what I’ve been suspecting. The dreaded molars are on their way.

2. On our way out of the pediatrician’s, we ran into Kimberly, my across the street neighbor who recommended this group of pediatricians to me. Her little girl Morgan (the one whose birthday party we went to last weekend) was there for her 12-month checkup. We chatted for a while in the parking lot and finally exchanged emails and phone numbers. She invited Cate and me to a mommy playgroup thing next week, so that should be fun. She seems really nice and I always find it really easy to chat with her, but I’m such a dork that I sort of have to hold myself back from grabbing her and asking her if she’ll be my new BFF. Apparently this whole stay-at-home mom gig has been a little more isolating than I thought it would be. Man, I need a job.

3. I lost my keys for an entire week, and couldn’t find them anywhere. I knew they were in the house because I remembered that the last time I had used them was to unlock the front door. Beyond that, though, I had no idea where they were. It was driving me insane – I had my extra car key, but no house keys. Yesterday, I was cleaning the house and finally found them. We have a big overstuffed chair in our living room (this one), and it was underneath the cushion. Hmm, I wonder what little blonde toddler thought to hide them there. Gah. Dave and I seriously have to put beepers on our keys so we can find them when she stashes them (or when we misplace them, which happens all. the. damn. time.).

4. On Saturday, two of my friends from college are getting married, and I’m so excited and happy for them. Kris and her fiance Tony are flying in for the weekend, so she and I are going to meet up for breakfast tomorrow. Dave will be working from home, and I’m leaving Cate with him, so Kris and I can have some one-on-one time without trying to wrangle a toddler in a restaurant.

Btw, does anyone know the appropriate attire for a lesbian wedding? Or “commitment ceremony” or whatever you want to call it since the stupid state won’t recognize their union? I’m assuming I just wear the same thing I’d wear to a regular ol’ hetero wedding, but if I’m about to make a huge fashion blunder, I’d appreciate a heads-up. My plan is to wear my faithful long black skirt (the one with the stretchy elastic waist that doesn’t mind if I gain or lose ten pounds) and a cute top. The wedding is in the early afternoon, so that’s probably ok, yes?

However, I do have to do something about my feet before this wedding, because I haven’t had a pedicure since Linda’s wedding back in July. Yikes. If I can find a good color nail polish already in the house (which is dependent on whether I can find the box of make-up that I almost never use), I might try to tackle my toes myself. Otherwise, I might have to drop the $20 to have them professionally done. We’ll see.

3 good things

1. MY CAR IS FIXED!!! The repair guys finished it yesterday, and I cannot begin to tell you how happy I am to have it back.

See, before:
my poor car

And after:
my car is finally fixed!

Isn’t it insanely shiny? I don’t know what those guys did to it, but it looks fantastic. I was so happy to have it back, I almost jumped on the hood and humped it like I was in a Whitesnake video. Dave said that would leave a bigger dent than the one the movers caused, so clearly I will never be speaking to him ever again.

2. Cate’s asthma is way better. She hasn’t needed her albuterol in over 24 hours, so that’s what we call recovered around here.

3. We went to our very first neighborhood gathering today: little Morgan across the street turned 1 year old, so her parents threw a party and all of the neighborhood kids were there. It was kind of insane, there were kids (mostly older, our neighborhood seems to have a lot of kids in the 5-10 year-old range) running around everywhere. Cate was a little clingy at first with all of the people around, but she soon relaxed and ran around and had a great time. She even let a couple of the other moms (and one teenage girl) pick her up, which is pretty amazing given how mommy-centric she is right now. Also, I got to meet a ton of our neighbors who I hadn’t met yet, and all of them seemed really super nice, so that was great.

And the absolute best part? After getting completely overstimulated by the kids and all the activity, baby girl crashed almost as soon as I got her home. Naptime has never been as easy as it was today. Yay! Can’t wait for e-baby’s birthday party tomorrow so we can wear her out all over again!

I'm digging September in NC

We’ve had the most gorgeous weather here for the past few days – it’s been mild and in the mid-70’s, just about perfect. I really hope this is how summer is going to end, because last weekend it was in the 90’s and absolutely brutal. But this? This, I can totally handle.

On Friday, Cate and I met up with Cat and hit up a big consignment sale at one of the local outlet malls. Because did you hear? They’re having a boy! So Cat needed to stock up on onesies with puppy dogs and fire engines on them, and well, Cate and I just needed to get out of the house.

Which reminds me: the car situation. The movers finally sent me a check for $2400, based on the car’s weight. (Apparently our moving insurance was only 60 cents per pound, which makes no sense at all, since you can have a heavy thing that’s worth nothing or a lightweight thing that’s very expensive, but whatever.) I had AAA tow it to a local repair shop – one that was recommended by my insurance company – and they said that the repairs are going to cost over $4,000. My insurance company told me to send back the movers’ check with a “thanks, but this isn’t sufficient” letter, which I did. So, my car will get fixed, I’ll pay my $500 deductible, and that’ll be the last of it for me. Meanwhile, Progressive is going to unleash their Mighty Lawyer Hellhounds on the moving company to try to get the full amount out of them. But either way, I have nothing to do with it from that point onward. So hooray! My car is getting fixed! And it should be ready this Wednesday, which is great. I mean, boo on paying $500, but at least they promised that this won’t make our insurance premiums go up since this whole thing was in no way my fault. I wasn’t even there when it happened.

The point is, after 6 weeks of being a single-car family, we’re kind of going insane. There have been a lot of days that Dave has to go into the office, which means he takes the car and Cate and I are stuck at home with no transportation. So, since he was able to work from home on Friday and we had the opportunity to meet up with Cat and go shopping? Even though I was just tagging along and didn’t need to buy anything? HECK YEAH! Anything to rid myself of this cabin fever.

(Oh, and for the people who suggest that I drop Dave off at the office so I could have the car all day: yes, I suppose we could do that. But it’s 12 miles from our house to his office. That’s 24 miles round-trip, and if I’m dropping him off & picking him up, that’s 48 miles in one day. Gas is expensive, and Cate tends to throw up if she’s in the car for more than 15 minutes. So really? Kind of not worth it.)

Ok, apologies for the random aside. Back to the weekend recap. Yesterday, we hit Target in the morning and got some items crossed off our shopping list. In the afternoon, since the weather was so nice, we headed over to our town’s community park. It was our first time there, and it was really nice. There’s a big lake, with ducks and geese in it. I had brought some bread to feed them, so they swarmed all around us, which was pretty exciting, since Cate had never been that close to a duck or a goose before.

But, some of the ducks were either shy or not hungry, and they didn’t come onto the shore. Cate decided that was no good, so she’d just go hop in the lake and try to grab them herself. When her plan to go splash in the filthy lake with the big “NO WADING OR SWIMMING AT ANY TIME” sign was thwarted… oh, she was angry. She threw quite an epic tantrum, to the point that we had to move far away from the lake and the assorted water fowl, just to get her to chill out. She eventually did, and we had fun people-watching. Especially the people who brought their dogs to the park. (Oh, how my girl loves doggies. She freaks out every time one is within view.)

Today is another gorgeous day, although Dave and I spent most of the morning cleaning. Bummer, but the house is looking (and smelling) really nice. Cate is napping right now, but when she wakes up, we’re going to head over to our neighborhood playground. It’s pretty dinky, but she likes it, and it’s a nice 15-minute walk to get there, so mama will get some exercise too. Should be fun.

weekend photo essay

I don’t really know how to sum up our weekend, so here are some of the 100 or so pictures we took.

First, Cate got some new toys from my parents that she really, really loved.

Tracy & Cate (with her new toy)

And she was generally loved on by everyone.

my brother's face in the background cracks me up

Cate & Tracy going out for a walk

Pop-Pop and Cate having some snuggle time

The musicians in our family kept us entertained.

Cate dancing while my brother plays guitar

We also had a playdate with Cat, Tony & Elizabeth.

Cat juggling 2 toddlers

Later, we went out for dinner, where my sister took this fantastic picture of Cat & Elizabeth.

The girls sat in their booster chairs next to each other and were pretty well-behaved for the entire meal.

Two Toddlers at TGI Friday's

More than any other activity this weekend, though, Cate ran in circles playing peekaboo with everyone. It kept us all laughing, and made her hysterically happy, so that worked out well.

look at how long her hair has gotten!!

It was a good weekend. (You can see the whole set here if you want.)
