strange days indeed

Things that happened today:
1. I got in a car accident. Very minor, one of those deals where everyone on the freeway slams on their brakes at once, and I did too, but I skidded & rear-ended the guy in front of me. No damage to his car (thank God, since it was my fault), but mine has a dent where his spare tire wheel bumped my hood. Oh well, could’ve been much worse.

2. I bought my fangs for Halloween. 🙂 I vant to dvink you blood….

3. I went to yoga & now I’m sore. Oh well, at least I did it.

4. I gave a Frito-Lay peanut butter & crackers thing to a homeless guy. I’m calling it my good deed for the day. My karma needs all the help it can get.

5. Shortly after said homeless person incident, I got a phone call which could potentially lead to something promising, but I’m not going to talk about for fear of jinxing it.

Thank god for Tylenol PM, otherwise I’d never get to sleep….

go me

I decided last night that I was going to start working out again. I haven’t been to the gym since…. oh who am I kidding, the last time I went was probably late August or early September. The crazy thing is that I’ve actually lost weight during this time, which I can only assume means that I’ve lost muscle mass. I’m not exactly sure what brought on this sudden inspiration for fitness — I don’t know if it was the fact that I went shopping yesterday & I wasn’t happy with the way most of the clothes fit me, or if it was the fact that last night I ordered Domino’s and ate 1 piece of pizza and the entire thing of Cinna-stix (which, as far as I’m concerned, is the only reason to ever order Domino’s, because their pizza pretty much sucks).

In any case, I woke up early this morning to go to yoga. Ok, technically the class starts at 11:30, so I didn’t wake up that early, but it’s early for me on a Sunday. Anyway, I get myself all psyched up for this, and the class is actually something they call PiYo because it combines pilates & yoga, and I knew it was going to kick my butt, but I was ready for it. So I get there, and there’s no teacher. Eh???? The guy who taught the previous class stuck around and did a 45-minute stretching class for those of us who were looking forward to yoga, which was cool because it was very similar to yoga, but it wasn’t quite the butt-kicking experience I had in mind. I figured that as long as I was at the gym, I might as well make it worth my while, so I did 20 minutes on the elliptical cross-trainer before I left.

Oddly enough, I noticed mid-workout that I felt more energetic than I had felt for weeks, so obviously this is something that my body has been missing. So that’s it, I’m going to make a conscious effort to get my lazy butt back to the gym on a regular basis. There’s a yoga class tomorrow evening, which I’ll be attending — I figure that if I write about it here, then I have to do it or I’ll feel guilty. But the teacher had better show up this time, dammit.

Oh yeah, I also cleaned my entire apartment tonight. Laundry, vacuuming, windexing everything in sight, the whole shi-bang. Overall, I think it’s safe to say that I had an unusually productive weekend. Strange.

now that's what I call nationalistic pride

I bought this sweater at Ross on Saturday, and wore it today. I’m totally NOT a brand name person, so I didn’t even bother to look at the label on it — I just noticed that it was $9.99, and it looked cute on me, so I bought it. Anyway, I’m getting ready for bed right now so I went to fold the sweater & put it away. I noticed that the brand name was “United States Sweaters“. Thinking that was kind of an odd name, I checked the rest of the label. Sure enough, in small print below that, it says:

“Knitted in Taiwan. Finished in China.”

I got a pretty good chuckle out of that one.

no thunder

There’s this weird thing about the weather in Seattle. It rains, but we almost never have thunder & lightning. In fact, it very rarely really rains. Typically it just drizzles or mists, and even that’s only in the winter. Sorry to shatter that little meteorological stereotype, but it’s true. I think that rumor about “it rains all the time in Seattle” was secretly devised to keep everyone in the country from wanting to move here. Anyway, the cloudy/drizzly weather started sometime in the past week or two, and it’s been nice because it feels weird when it’s sunny & warm for too long here. Now when it’s overcast & 55 degrees, it’s more like… ahh, balance has been restored to the universe at last.

Anyway, I was sitting in my apartment tonight, and I heard thunder. I got so excited about it because I miss it — I know that sounds odd, but actually most of the people that I’ve met here who are from other parts of the U.S. also comment on the fact that they miss the drama of thunderstorms. Anyway, I was listening and enjoying it for a minute or two, then I realized that it’s not thunder at all.

What was it, you ask? Well, I’ll tell you….

The guy upstairs is moving furniture around.

Damn.

Now I’m just annoyed with the noise, I can’t even pretend that it’s thunder so I can enjoy it.

And on that note, I’m off to lie in bed, where I can freely sulk about noisy neighbors and silent weather clouds.

weird

I’m early for work. This never happens. I don’t really know what to do with myself for the next 10-15 minutes. Heaven forbid I head out early. That just won’t do at all.

Nothing else really noteworthy this morning.

Apologies for the boring blog post. Oh well, I’m sure it’s not the first & most likely won’t be the last.

14 year-old boneless contortionists & other fun

I saw Cirque du Soleil last night with Scott. And may I just say, WOW! We caught the Alegria tour – my understanding is that there’s several of them currently touring around the country at any given time. I have to say, I really wasn’t at all sure that I was going to be into it, and I was totally blown away. It was a great show. If it happens to pass through your town, go see it.

Oh yeah, if anyone gets this, please fill me in on the joke. I think it’s funny, but I can’t explain why:

Badgers & Mushrooms

Be careful – that song will stick in your head for ages.

I don’t know why I feel obligated to write something here every day. It’s not like anyone really reads it. Must be my OCD flaring up.

Since I don’t really have anything to talk about today, I thought I’d use this opportunity to talk about just how wonderful my bed is. I guess I’m appreciating it more than usual today because I just spent a considerable amount of time in it. I crashed sometime around 8:30 last night and didn’t move until 6 a.m. Teenie woke me up a couple of times when I rolled over – she would indignantly meow because I bumped her out of whatever warm spot she had snuggled into.

Anyway, my bed is this amazing queen-size pillow-top mattress that my parents bought me when I was in college. It is quite possibly the softest mattress ever created. You get in, and the mattress hugs you & rocks you to sleep. It’s even become legendary among my friends & family. When Kris (the smoker) comes to visit, she screws up her usual beauty regimen by showering at night so I’ll let her sleep in the bed with me. (I can’t deal with the cigarette smell otherwise.) It’s also where my mom & sister have been known to sleep when visiting.

And I bought these amazing sheets during my brief part-time stint at Bed Bath & Beyond, so getting into bed is really like crawling into a cloud. Sigh…. I don’t know why I don’t spend more time there.

So I’m unusually decaffeinated and feeling great today. I think 9 hours of sleep should be a required nightly minimum. People would be a lot nicer.

Oh yeah, and my kitchen & living room smelled like roses when I got up this morning. Thanks, Scott.
