Amelie & Kris

Just got home from having dinner with Scott & Ted over at Scott’s place. Scott made baked chicken (yum), I made my fried zucchini with parmesan (yummy-yum), and Ted made creme brulee (the goddess of all yummy-yum-yums). And I finally saw Amelie for the first time. Very cute movie, but god, the French are a weird culture.

Talked to Kris this afternoon, which made me a little sad. We talk every weekend, and sometimes it doesn’t really hit me just how much I miss having her around. Today it did. She’s the only thing I miss about Memphis, I just wish she’d move here. She wants to, it’s just not really financially feasible at this point. But dang, sometimes I miss her so bad I could just cry. I’ve lived in lots of different places over the last 4 1/2 years, and I have yet to meet anyone who I can have that kind of conspiratorial fun with like I can with her. The vast majority of my friends in Washington at this point are guys — which is cool because they’re all really awesome guys, but there’s a certain comfort level that’s just never going to be there like it is with her. Oh well.

Weird changes happening at work. I’ll know more this week. Stay tuned.

ow ow ow

Tossed back one too many last night, I think. Nate & I watched Wonder Boys — he had never seen it, and I love that movie (“Vernon, go home to your mother!” “Why is he calling you Vernon?”). And we started to watch Old School but we got distracted by I Love the 80s Strikes Back on VH-1. It was 1982 — the recap of Wrath of Khan alone is worth the entire episode.

Oh yeah, and I invented a new cocktail last night:
* 1/3 Orange Stoli
* 1/3 Orange Bacardi
* 1/3 Orange Juice
* Splash of sweet & sour just for taste

It’s surprisingly delicious — the orange flavoring in the liquor really makes it taste like there’s almost no booze in it at all. Which is, naturally, what will get you in trouble. I made Nate barf — I swear it was not my intention, but I do feel a little bit special about it since he’s never gotten tanked to the point of yacking before. We kissed a little right before that. I’m hoping that’s not what induced the vomiting.

So sometime around 3 a.m., I left Nate on his bathroom floor — I felt pretty guilty about that, but I brought him a bowl and asked him to go lie down in his bed, and he wouldn’t. And you can’t really argue with a guy who’s a foot taller than you. So I started to leave, but his cat Spike made it out the front door ahead of me, and he’s supposed to be an indoor kitty, so I spent several minutes chasing him through the parking lot before I was able to retrieve him, toss him back inside Nate’s apartment, and leave. I walked the 1/2 mile back to my place, and I realized that even though I live in one of the safest neighborhoods in the Seattle area, my street is very dark at night and a little creepy. Then I finally make it to my apartment, and there’s a downhill slope right as you enter the parking lot, which would be where I slipped & fell. Skinned my knee (it’s also swollen & bruised at this point), and tore a hole in my jeans in the process. I repeated lots of bad words over & over as kind of a mantra while I hobbled to my front door. I’m actually more pissed about the jeans than the skinned knee. They were really comfy, dammit.

Anyway, I’m off to get something disgustingly greasy for brunch.

sunday night recap

Friday night was fun. I met up with Scott & the guys at Shorty’s, which is a vaguely sketchy bar with the most disgusting Trainspotting-esque ladies room I’ve ever witnessed. (No seat, just a bowl. And it won’t flush. Lovely.) So we quickly left there (for which I was extremely grateful) and headed over to Kell’s, which seems to have become my favorite Irish bar in Seattle. After that we ended up at a gay dance club on First called Sonja’s or something like that, which was pretty cool. And kind of amusing to notice how all the guys seemed a little more tense in that environment. I guess it’s just ingrained in the heterosexual-male nature.

Anyway, Scott & I checked out apartments on Saturday, but didn’t find much that I was just absolutely head-over-heels for. I think the problem is that I am just not willing to live in a place without a washer & dryer. I’ve done the laundromat thing — or worse, the shared laundry facilities where you feel safe enough to leave your stuff alone and then your neighbors move it out of the washer so they can put their stuff in, and then you have to live with the knowledge that your neighbors have handled your underthings. And I’m just not willing to go through that again. Call me a spoiled brat if you must. But most of the places I saw on Saturday didn’t even have a dishwasher, which I think of as a pretty basic home appliance, and I am totaly unprepared to deal with that.

In any case, I have decided that if I move to Seattle, I either want to live in Queen Anne or Eastlake or something in that general area. I like the idea that I could have ample sources of entertainment (bars, restaurants, etc.) within walking distance. So today, I thought I’d check out the Sunday listings just to see if there was anything new, and there was, so I went back to check them out. (I’m starting to think of this as a fantasy that I like indulging. I haven’t actually committed to anything yet.) I found 4 places that I really, really like — and 2 of them I may actually be able to afford. One is in Queen Anne (and it has the required amenities), and the other is in the University District, on a street that’s only about 3 blocks from Dante’s, the bar with the cool devil matchbooks and the evil knock-you-on-your-butt shots. I don’t know if that type of thing should dictate where I live, unless I have aspirations of becoming an alcoholic (which I don’t), but it’s a cool idea. That one is not actually an apartment, it’s the upstairs of a house that’s basically been converted into a duplex-type setup.

So that’s about it for my weekend. Watched a couple of movies last night, “Bend It Like Beckham” and “The Hours”. I guess I had a chick flick moment at the video store, but I really liked both of them. Although I have to say, I don’t know why Nicole Kidman won the best actress Oscar for “The Hours”, because I honestly thought her character was the most boring of the 3 female leads. I thought both Meryl Streep & Julianne Moore were better. But hey, that’s just me.

Hope everyone had a good weekend.

my migratory existence

Sorry it’s been a while since I’ve posted. I’ve been preoccupied with several things as of late, most of which I can’t really talk about (combination of fear of jinxing it, and the fact that certain people read this who don’t need to know this information). One of the smaller items that’s been on my mind is that I’m kicking around the idea of moving into Seattle. This is dependent on a few factors which may or may not come to fruition, but I think I like the idea. I’ve lived in the southern & eastern suburbs of the city and have yet to do the real urban living thing, so I think it’d be a cool change. Plus it would be nice for those of you who come to visit me here, so all the cool stuff to do would be within walking distance (or at least a very short cab ride away). And who knows, it might even be cheaper than where I’m living now — although it appears that I will have to sacrifice my washer & dryer, because I can’t seem to find any places within my price range that have that amenity.

So to that end, Scott has bravely volunteered to go apartment hunting with me tomorrow. And once again, this is why I always tell people to write my address in pencil. I’ve lived in this apartment for about 15 months now, which is the longest I’ve lived anywhere since the house I rented with Kris and Kristy/Megan/whoever-would-pay-1/3-the-rent back in college.

Anyway, tonight I’m off to meet up with Scott & some other Microsoft geek boys for a night on the town. Hmm. Should be interesting.

back on the market

Scott & I sort of “broke up” last night. I say “broke up” in quotes because it was quite possibly one of the nicest, most grown-up ends to a relationship that I’ve ever witnessed. Seriously, there was no profanity, no crying, no throwing empty bottles of vodka at the other person’s head (ok, that only happened once…). I think we’ve both known for a while that things weren’t really working between us romantically, and it’s a testament to how much we genuinely care about each other that we tried to work it out for as long as we did. He is, without a doubt, one of the coolest people I’ve met since I moved out here — he’s smart, he’s funny, he totally gets me — and I think he’s definitely going to remain one of the most important people in my life. We’re just taking the whole dating element out of the equation, but we’re still going to spend time together. He’s coming over tomorrow night for dinner and “Sex & the City” reruns, as is our usual Tuesday night routine, so I really do think things are going to be ok.

So, am I bummed that things didn’t work out? Sure. Am I totally heartbroken & devastated? Nah. I think we’re both going to escape from this relatively unscathed and better friends for having gone through it.

Oh, but just for the record, this is staying true to my 2-month relationship track record, which I’m not entirely happy about. It feels like some kind of weird jinx that was put on me in college that’s stuck with me through the years. Maybe it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy at this point, who knows. Oh well, this one made it to 2 months & 4 days, so maybe that’s an optimistic sign for next time. 🙂

P.S. That subject line is a total joke. I’m not ready for the market just yet, I’m going to need some recuperative downtime first. I think it’s safe to say the Match.com subscription won’t be renewed for a while yet.

all the way from Memphis

Big news for Kris today: she got a job as a full-time staff accountant with a CPA firm in Memphis. She’s been a temp with them since January and was going to leave to go work at Goldsmith’s, but one of the main partners has kind of taken Kris under his wing, and apparently he can’t stand the thought of letting go of his little protege — and he no doubt realized what a genius she is — so he offered her a full-time job. With benefits. No more temping. No more cobra health insurance. Hooray!! I’m so excited for her.

This also means that she’s going to be one of the most insanely educated people I know, because on top of her BA in Communication and her MBA degree, now she’s also going back to school to get her accounting degree.

And after that, she’ll take over the world. And I can say I knew her when.

In other news…. I’m beat. Goodnight, folks.
