more cute cat photos!

I had to take this picture last night because it absolutely cracked me up.
Dave taking a catnap. Hee! Get it?
That’s three cats on one husband. The poor guy just wanted to lie down and take a quick nap on the couch, and they all immediately cozied up on him. I love how Cleo always has to be right up close to his face. She’ll do that to me occasionally, but she absolutely adores Dave and I know good and well that when she snuggles up on me, I’m only a poor substitute for the one she really wants. Not that I blame her, he is a damn good cuddler.

Also, Beaumont has a new hobby. He likes to attack the characters on the screen while Dave is playing video games. None of the cats have ever paid attention to the TV screen or computer monitors before, but this has suddenly become his favorite thing to do.
Beaumont playing video games, sorta
Go figure. And for the record, the reason why he looks sort of sparkly in that photo was because he had just come in out of the rain. And unlike me, Dave doesn’t get a towel to dry the cats off when they come inside soaking wet.

announcement

Ok. So. There’s this thing, which has been keeping me sort of preoccupied for the past couple of weeks, and I wasn’t sure whether or not to write about it and share it with the whole World Wide Internets(tm). I asked Dave what he thought, and at first he said it was too personal, then he changed his mind and was like “ehh…” Thanks for the help, honey. I’ve decided that since this little blog o’ mine is the closest thing I have to a diary, I might as well document it for my own personal future reference. So here goes.

Attention world: I am going off birth control.

That’s right. I know some people will probably think it’s too soon, since Dave and I have only been married for five months. But those are probably the same people who thought we were crazy for getting married after only a year. And you know, we both know who we are, and we know what we want. I’ve been calling Dave my “marriage and babies guy” for quite a while, and I know he’s the person I’m going to spend the rest of my life with, so why wait? We aren’t going to be marking days on the calendar or anything, and I think that it takes an average of about a year for most couples to conceive, so we aren’t expecting anything to happen immediately. We’re just going to throw caution to the wind and see what nature has in store for us.

Honestly, I was worried that I was pressuring Dave into the baby thing. I’ve been ready for years, and lately I’ve had to hold myself back from sniffing babies’ heads when I see them at the supermarket. (Um, not like they have babies for sale right next to the canteloupes or anything. It’s just that recently, since I’ve been going to get groceries in the middle of the day, most of the other shoppers are stay-at-home mom’s with their children.) I kept offering him out’s – like, maybe this isn’t a good idea while I’m not working, maybe we should wait until we’re more financially stable or until we’ve been married for at least a year, etc. But he seems to be almost more enthusiastic about this than me. I suppose it makes sense for me to be a little more cautious and nervous about it, since I’m the one whose body is going to go through all sorts of changes and the joy (ha!) of childbirth. But I also know that being a mom is something I truly want to be. And I’m pretty sure that I’ll be good at it – all I have to do is repeat what my mom did, because she’s fantastic.

So, that’s what all of those vague references to doctors were about. I wanted to make sure that I had the ok to go off of birth control, given my past history. It looks like everything is fine and all systems are a go, so to speak, so that’s good. This still feels weird to write about, because we haven’t talked about this with most of our family; although I guess by posting this, a few more people will be in the loop. (Hi!) It also seems a little gross to announce, “Hey everyone! We’re going to be having lots & lots of unprotected sex at our house! Yee-haw!” I know we’re married, so technically that’s allowed, but I’ve never really been one to talk about my sex life, so it feels kind of icky to start now. But like I said, this is my journal, so I have to be honest here.

Anyway, that’s the latest news from our part of the world. How are you?

birthday!

No news yet on the job situation, except that my nails are a mess from biting them due to worrying. So instead of listening to me whine, here’s the recap of Dave’s birthday weekend. First, on Friday night, I managed to throw together a semi-surprise party. Nothing huge, just a few friends over at our house for dinner and cake. Hoo lordy, the cake. Back when we did the cake-tasting for our wedding, there was this one cake that Dave absolutely loved. It was a chocolate cake with Bailey’s Irish cream filling. And it was awesome, but I didn’t want a chocolate wedding cake because I had this weird fear that people (meaning: me) would get it stuck in their teeth and then be smiling for photos, and that would be bad. So I told Dave at the time that I would get him one for his birthday. I know he forgot about it, but I didn’t, so I ordered the Bailey’s cake from our wedding cake lady, and I picked it up on Friday afternoon. Here’s the thing: this is the biggest cake I have ever seen in my life. I ordered the one that said it was about 20 servings – thinking, ok, party guests can each have 2 slices, then we’ll have a couple left over for the weekend. Y’all? There is over half a cake still in my fridge – that’s after I hacked off a huge chunk for Dave to take to work with him this morning to distribute among his co-workers – and just the half takes up almost an entire shelf in the fridge. I’m not kidding. I also attempted to make a trifle, which is a dessert that Dave’s mum makes that he loves – I had emailed her to get the recipe so I could make it exactly right. That turned out semi-successful. I should’ve used pound cake as the base instead of angel food cake, because the latter turns into a cakey liquid goo substance when soaked with sherry. As for the sherry, I think I used way too much. Seriously, you can get a really nice buzz from one serving of the stuff. But the rest of the trifle (since the sherry-soaked cake is only the bottom layer of about 5 or 6 layers), it’s pretty good. Oh well, lesson learned for next time – I’ll get it right for Christmas.

Anyway, the party was only a semi-surprise because Dave knew that there was a birthday-related activity going on, but he didn’t know exactly what it was. I made him stay in our bedroom for something like 4 hours while I set everything up downstairs. (I brought him tea and he had DVD’s to watch up there, so it’s not like he suffered.) I just couldn’t figure out any other way to pull it off – if I made him stay away from the house for hours, he would’ve seen people’s cars in the driveway when he got home. But I found out afterward that he sort of knew what was up, because apparently our housekeeper (who speaks poor English) didn’t understand when I asked her to please come early in the day on Friday because I was throwing a surprise party for Dave’s birthday that night. So she got there on Friday morning and said to Dave, “Your wife said I should come early because you’re having a party here tonight.” Goddammit. Oh well, I tried.

Other than that, the weekend was pretty nice and laid-back. I can’t think of anything notable, except that I never got out of my pajamas all day on Saturday. Seriously, I took a shower and put them back on. I think that might be a sign of pending insanity. And now, it’s back to my regularly scheduled nail-biting and waiting for the phone to ring. And compulsively checking my email every 10 to 15 minutes. Fun!

I could've danced all night (or at least until 1 a.m.)

Saturday marked a very big first in Dave’s and my relationship: we went dancing. I have to preface this by explaining that this is not his idea of a good time at all. But, it was our friend Janet’s birthday, and she organized this whole drinks/dessert/dancing thing, so that’s what we did. I had talked Dave into it by promising that I would drive so he could drink all he wanted, and that he wouldn’t have to dance at all. And really, if he had just played pool with his friends, and if it had just been the girls out on the floor shakin’ our respective groove thangs, I would’ve been perfectly happy. It had been forever since the last time I was in a dance club, and I was very excited just to be out that late on a Saturday night. (Seriously, y’all, we are so boring, we’re usually asleep by 10:00.) But anyway, two of Dave’s buddies were also there, and they were both doing the “white man’s overbite” with their wives, and I guess Dave had just enough to drink that he was able to ditch his neuroses and loosen up, and he danced with me! For like, a really long time! In public! It was so awesome. And really, I don’t know what his hang-up is, because he isn’t a bad dancer at all. We stayed out until around 1:00 in the morning, and it was so much fun. I had a great time.

Speaking of birthdays, Dave’s is a week from today (September 19th), so mark your calendars now.

Work news: that phone interview that went really well last week? Apparently they want me for an in-person interview, which is a good sign, but I haven’t heard back from the HR recruiter lady who’s supposed to tell me exactly when this interview is going to be. So that’s annoying, because I’m really anxious about it since THIS IS ONLY THE EXACTLY PERFECT JOB FOR ME.

More hurricane horribleness: my cousin was on the news again, this time not speaking, but there’s an interview with my cousin-in-law’s father (Dr. CILF, remember?). It’s a story about a nursing home that didn’t get evacuated, and well over half of the residents were killed, and it’s absolutely tragic, much like everything else about this damn hurricane.

Blogpooling

In an effort to become more environmentally aware, I have decided to blogpool with Cindy. Not only does blog-pooling result in less harm to the environment, reducing the emission of noxious gases from the internet that are destroying the ozone layer , but it also entitles one to use the HOV lanes on the information superhighway. You want to double your bandwidth and help the cause? Blogpooling is the way to go!

But seriously; it appears that I am such a clutz for allowing some idiot spammer to hack my site that I’ve had to shut it down for now. Not that I was exactly prolific, but it still pissed me off none the less. For now though, Cindy has a new blog-buddy.

Yay!

new author

Since Dave’s blog went away (tons o’ comment spam + never posting = why bother keeping it?), I set him up with an account here. So, you may now start seeing the occasional post from my darling husband. Of course, if he becomes a regular contributor on poobou.com, I’m going to have to change my little tagline, because my blog won’t be all about the nerdy southern girl anymore, but about her significant other as well. Hmm, how to sum up both of our lives in one quick, catchy phrase? That’ll be a challenge. Anyway, be on the lookout to see if he starts writing anything. Or, start leaving him nasty comments and emails telling him to get on the stick and start blogging.

vacation, all I ever wanted

Somehow I forgot to mention that Dave and I are going on vacation tomorrow. I don’t know how I’ve managed to not blog about it, because I’m really excited about this trip. Our honeymoon, in which we were planning to spend 2 weeks in the UK, keeps getting postponed because, um, well, we’re broke. Originally we were going to go in June. Then we said maybe in the fall. Now we’re kicking around the idea of going for our one-year anniversary, because it just might take us that long to finish paying for the wedding. So it has been decided that we should take a little mini-honeymoon in the meantime, which won’t cause nearly the same amount of financial stress.

So, tomorrow we’re going to the San Juan Islands, which is a 2-hour drive and another hour-ish ferry ride away from here. It’s kind of amazing that for a place so close, they have totally different weather – the highs this weekend are going to be in the upper 60’s – as opposed to being in the 80’s around here (believe me, in the land of no air-conditioning, that is a WORLD of difference). I found a really cool Japanese-themed bed-and-breakfast where we’re going to stay. I have a feeling that I’m going to fall in love with the bathroom, since they mention on their web site that they have a “two-headed pulsating shower” and an “oversized two-person air massage tub” which supposedly fills from the ceiling. I may never leave.

I’ve also booked us a trip on a whale-watching tour on Saturday morning, which I’m really excited about because, orcas! In nature! How cool is that? Y’all may remember that we were actually going to do this last year when Kris came to visit, but it ended up not happening. I think it had something to do with staying out too late drinking, plus we were trying to make a day trip out of it, and 3 hours each way meant that we had to get up at 6 a.m. or something, and well, no. But no matter. I’m going to see whales this time! And I’m really excited about it!! Can’t you tell how excited I am by all of my exclamation points?!

So yeah. Vacation. Woo! Hope everyone has a good weekend. I’ll report back on Monday, with photos.
