My baby is half a year old today. I cannot begin to tell you how weird that feels to me. Cate had her 6-month pediatrician appointment yesterday, where we found out that she’s now up to 19 pounds, 11 ounces (ouch), she’s 26.5 inches long, and her head circumference is officially off the charts. That’s my big-brained baby.
As far as milestones from last month, we have:
* Teething. About three weeks ago, she started chewing on her hands constantly, and always trying to bite Dave and me as well. She’s always tried to shove our hands into her mouth, but the biting thing was new. I managed to check out her gums, and I can see her front bottom teeth just barely under the surface. I have no idea how long it’ll take them to come in, but still, that’s pretty exciting.
* Sitting. She’s trying to figure out how to sit independently. She can do it for a couple of seconds before she tips over. I have a feeling that she’s going to have that one nailed pretty soon.
* Trying to feed herself. If you hold a bottle in front of her, she grabs it with both hands and shoves it into her mouth. She’s starting to do the same thing with sippy cups (we have the kind with handles on both sides – easy to grip), but since she only gets water in the cup, she gets bored with that pretty quickly. And wet. I don’t know who first came up with the concept of spill-proof cups, but they need to improve that one.
And in honor of her half-birthday, Cate got her first taste of vegetables. She had carrots. They were a huge hit, and an even bigger mess.
We’ve been having a great time with my folks this week. My mom kept Cate occupied so my dad and I could finish painting my kitchen. My new hinges finally showed up today, so after I get my cabinet doors re-hung, I’ll have to take pictures of my pretty new kitchen to show off. I guess it would’ve been smart to take “before” pictures for comparison’s sake, but I sort of forgot about that until just now.
Oh, and my dad has been trying to mow our lawn. Our riding mower is broken, so he’s trying to use the regular old push mower. On two acres. And most of our yard is as tall as my hips. Thank God we’ve been having mild weather, I was worried he was going to give himself a heart attack out there.
My brother and sister are flying in for the weekend tonight. My folks are actually picking my brother up at the airport right now. His flight from Charlotte was supposed to get in about 8 minutes before my sister’s flight from NYC. He was on time, but unfortunately my sister has been delayed over 3 1/2 hours, so she’ll be here sometime after midnight. Poor thing. My sister is the family photographer, so I’m sure I’ll have tons of pics by the time the weekend is over.
Happy half birthday, Cate! It sounds like you are doing very well! You’ll get the sit up thing in no time.
Poobou, your folks sound like they are having a wonderful time! Say, does the grunting and groaning associated with BMs ever get less obvious? 😉
Wow, she will be in toddler clothes soon (if she isn’t already?). You’re just darn lucky she waited until after she was born to become The Adorable Hulk (and she is just SOOOOOOOO adorable- I wish I was there to nibble her pink pudgy cheeks).
The most spill-proof sippy cups I’ve found are the Avent magic training cups. They don’t dribble at all if you assemble them right (careful to get the ring screwed on properly– if you adjust the handle position, be sure to check that it’s still tightly screwed on).
