happy new year

Just wandering around the apartment, dancing to my new Dave Matthews cd (the live in Central Park album, which my parents gave me for Christmas), and waiting for the hot rollers in my hair to cool. It’s a holiday, dammit, I’m going for BIG hair. So I thought I’d take a moment to tell all of my friends and family (& whoever else is bored enough to read this) happy new year. Hope everyone has a wonderful night.

snow!

I’ve been incredibly lazy since I got back from my trip, so tonight I’m feeling very proud of myself because I partially unpacked my suitcase and loaded the dishwasher. I also just took out the trash, which gave me a reason to check my mailbox, which I haven’t done in the past week since I’ve been gone. It’s been freezing cold here lately, but I have to admit that I was still pretty shocked when I walked outside with my trash tonight & saw that it was snowing. This is Seattle, it never snows here. Oh well, it’s pretty to watch, even though I know it won’t hang around for long.

back

Just walked in the door of my apartment… ah, home sweet home.

The trip was pretty fun overall, I guess. A bit more drama than I’m used to. I’m not going to get into most of it because it’s internal family stuff that I don’t think I need to share with the whole world, y’know? Christmas was good. The family is doing well, all things considered.

The trip to New Orleans was great too, because it was really awesome to get to see my extended family. It’s been 2 years since I’ve been to one of these shindigs, and it hit me that I don’t realize how much I miss a lot of them until I see them again. Particularly a couple of my cousins. Kris totally blended right in and everyone loved her, as I knew they would, although I’m pretty sure that at least a couple of people thought that she was my girlfriend, not just my friend. Ah well, no biggie. If that’s the worst thing they think of me, I think I’ll be ok.

As for going out with Kris in New Orleans on Friday night — hmmm… Well, we had a lot of fun for the first couple of hours, but after that, everything gets hazy for me. I will say that I don’t think I’ve ever been drunk to the point of being psychotic before. I’m almost exclusively a happy drunk, so this was very weird. I was crying & screaming, and my skin felt like it was going to crawl off of me. Kris actually had to go get my mother in the hotel room next door (apparently I asked her to, but I don’t remember the majority of that part of the evening) and my mom had to lie on top of me to make me stop shaking. It scared the hell out of me, and I decided that I’m going to stop drinking as of now. There were a couple of guys that I had been talking to and kind of flirting with, and I’m guessing that one of them could very likely have put something in one of my drinks because I have never had that kind of reaction (or anything even vaguely like that) with alcohol before. But even if that’s true, the fact that my judgment was impaired to the point where I left my beverage unattended and didn’t have my guard up is proof enough that I need to watch myself.

So that’s it. I’m volunteering to be designated driver on New Year’s Eve. I can’t afford the cab fare anyhow.

Anyway, we left New Orleans kinda late last night & drove back to Jackson. I think I got about 2 1/2 hours of sleep before I had to get up to catch my 6:50 a.m. flight back to Seattle this morning. Bah. At this point, my plan for the rest of the day is to eat something, take a shower, crawl in bed & stay there until tomorrow morning.

For the record, Teenie had fun too. She doesn’t care much for flying, but she never makes so much as a peep. She just quietly shakes in her kitty carrier under the seat in front of me. But there’s a lot of room for her to run around at my mom’s house, so she got lots of exercise, and she played with my mom’s cat a bit. She seems happy to be home, though. She’s currently making the rounds of the apartment, rubbing her scent on all the furniture again (as if it all might have faded in the past 5 days).

early

Ok, I’m early. Like WAY early. Like “why didn’t I sleep in another hour & a half?” early. I guess I freaked at the prospect of not having packed anything, so I got up at 6 a.m. I need to leave my apartment around 9:30 or so, which’ll put me at the airport around 10:00 for my noon flight. I don’t care what anyone says, I’m not getting there more than 2 hours before my flight — every time I’m actually on time or early, I breeze right through security & end up sitting at the gate for an hour, waiting to board.

Anyway, it’s 8:15 and I’m done. Packed. I have a few things left to gather up (cd’s for the walkman, etc.), but all the critical stuff is done. Even the curling irons (yes, I meant that in the plural form — it takes 2 of them to get my ‘do to look right) are packed. Since I have to curl my hair with them in the morning and then wait for them to cool off before I put them in the suitcase, they’re usually the last thing to go. And they’re done.

Damn. I’m glad I’m not frantically running late, but all things being equal, I think I would’ve preferred to sleep in.

countdown

Teenie & I depart for Jackson, MS in approximately 14 hours. And how much have I packed in preparation for this trip, you ask? Not a single bloomin’ thing. I got my suitcase out of the closet, but I think that’s all that I’m up for tonight. I’m whipped, I think I’m just going to crash, get up early tomorrow, and do all of my packing then.

I probably won’t be posting anything while I’m gone, due to the fact that my parents live in the dark ages & are still on dial-up. (Shudder.) Actually, I shouldn’t complain about that — if they had DSL or cable, they’d undoubtedly call me to troubleshoot it every time it had the slightest glitch. Anyway, I’ll do the trip recap thang after I get back on the 28th.

Oh, I got my Christmas gift from my boss today. It was a gift card to my favorite salon/spa. (I’m pretty sure it was his wife’s idea — I should probably send her a thank-you card.) I’ll be booking that massage appointment as soon as I get back to Seattle. I imagine that I’ll need it after running around 3 different airports with a backpack on one shoulder and a 12-pound cat on the other.

So how hard do you suppose it’ll be to get through airport security with a bottle of kitty narcotics? They have Teenie’s name & the vet’s name on them. I really hope they don’t give me any crap about that.

Have a fabulous Christmas, everybody.

thank you for this site

I saw Henry Rollins do a live spoken word show almost a year ago, and one of his rants was that if you want to know how to spot a d*ckhead, he’s the guy behind the wheel of a Hummer. Ever since, I think of that every time I see someone driving one of those stupid gas-guzzling “I’m a guy who needs to overcompensate for some personal shortcoming but obviously money isn’t the problem” vehicles.

Apparently I’m not the only one who thinks so, either. I snagged this link off of gclark’s web site, and I loved it, so I thought I’d share.

Speaking of which, it’s now officially the 21st, so happy birthday, gclark. Hope the old-age police don’t come & repossess your stuff.

gimme carbs

It’s official, Atkins is over. I lost about 7-8 pounds, so I’m happy, but good lord it messed me up. Here’s the story: on Wednesday, I noticed that my legs were really sore like I had over-exercised them. Weird thing is, I hadn’t been working out at all. It got worse on Thursday. Then today, not only were my legs sore, but my right knee (which I sprained 3 years ago) was hurting, and I had this weird nerve in my right shoulder that was aching & shooting pain all down the right side of my torso. I called my mom & described it to her (she’s sort of the unofficial family doctor — if you have a symptom, she can probably give you a reasonable diagnosis), and she told me to go home & eat some carbs & see what happened.

I got home, and I had a piece of toast and some canned pineapple. Then I took a nice, long nap. When I woke up, my legs weren’t sore anymore, and my shoulder wasn’t doing the shooting-pain thing. My knee is still kind of messed up, but I was doing some strange twisting around (crawling on the floor in a tight space & whatnot) when I was re-organizing the network cables for a client of ours this week, so I guess that could be related.

Oh well, I did learn a few valuable things out of this — for one, the Atkins brand Banana Nut Harvest cereal is freakin’ awesome, and the s’more protein bar is pretty good too. So maybe I’ll just try to implement those types of sweets to replace some of the crap I was eating. But I don’t think I’ll be going hard-core low-carb again anytime soon.

Maybe I’ll try Sugarbusters next — at least you can still have fruit & whole grains with that.
