A scene from my weekend in Memphis, part one

I haven’t decided if I’m doing more than one of these or not. Regardless, the following is an actual conversation that I had with my best friend, Kris. She’s an absolutely brilliant girl, but sometimes… well, she is a natural blonde. And that’s all I’m gonna say about that.

Kris: Do you remember that show about dinosaurs that was on in the 80’s? Apparently it’s still on one of the kids’ channels, because my nephew watches it now. I thought it was funny that it’s still on the air.
Me: A show about dinosaurs?
Kris: Yeah, you know. It had the mom dinosaur, the dad dinosaur, and the baby…
Me: Was it a cartoon or something?**
Kris: Well yeah, I mean, they aren’t real.
Me: (pauses, looks astounded) Really?!
Kris: (slowly realizes that she has just implied that a show about a family of dinosaurs could possibly be filmed using the real, live animals; slaps own forehead) Shit.

Fin.

**NOTE: “or something” actually meant “or puppets, or claymation,” not live animals. I would presume that it would be difficult to do any type of children’s comedy show using real animals, living or dead.

  1. "it would be difficult to do any type of children's comedy show using real animals"? Did you never watch Gentle Ben?

  2. What about Jurassic Park? That was filmed with real dinosaurs. I think the kids were CGI though -. they were totally unrealistic.

  3. I realize this makes me a bit of a freak, especially among the sci-fi crowd, but I've actually never seen any of the Jurassic Park movies. I haven't seen Lord of the Rings either. Yep, this whole "computer geek" image of mine is a total facade.

  4. I think you're referring to the TV show Dinosaurs, which aired on ABC in the early 1990s. They were Jim Henson creatures, a combination of puppets, muppets and animatronics, I think. The show was pretty clever, actually, but it just wasn't the same after Jim Henson died and was cancelled soon after. It aired after the Wonder Years. The thing that anyone might remember was that the baby would hit people with rattles, frying pans etc screaming, "Not the Mama! Not the Mama!"This comment brought to you courtesy of my freakishly long and detaied memory.

  5. Gentle Ben, British! You gotta be kidding me…I still remember that annoying little ugly kid shouting "Baayyyennn, Baayyyenn" for half the show; while his dad just pissed about on that hover boat thing.

  6. Angie, I believe that IS the show, since Kris also mentioned the "not the Mama!" thing. I guess they're re-running it on some kids channel now. I never watched it – or the Wonder Years, for that matter. So I just thought she was insane. Thanks for clearing that up. 🙂
